Sleeping Together

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, in a family way. I was watching The Bling Ring and was really happily surprised to see a family where siblings slept in the same bed. The way my sister was so embarrassed about her friends knowing she and I shared a bed at night I thought we were freaks for doing it.

My sister had a full-sized bed that we shared for years until one night she was having some kind of teenage angst crisis keeping me up and I went and passed out in my own bed (that was just sort of there as decoration in my bedroom up until then.) Didn't have any trouble transitioning to sleeping alone. (My mother harbors some quasi-Freudian belief that children who are forced to sleep alone against their will are more likely to compensate for the lack of emotional fulfillment in adulthood by hopping around other peoples' beds. If you know what I mean.

Anyhoo, did you share a bed with a family member too, no big deal?

I've shared beds with loads of people, only some of whom were family, in a completely non-sexual way. If you've got limited room and a lot of people, or if you've got a double bed and someone staying over it just seems rude to make them sleep on cold hard floor, or a narrow couch. I don't get the hysteria. Sleep is just sleep.

I used to when we went on vacation and things like that but I hate sharing beds with people. Even my husband and I have separate beds (kind of like on I Love Lucy haha). People think we're a bit odd because of it though...

I'm not married, but I also hate sharing beds with people. I just feel like I can't move or shuffle or roll over without disturbing someone, so I have to lie there like the dead and try to sleep.

Also, one of my married friends and her spouse have separate bedrooms due to sleep issues, so I don't think you're odd.

My sisters and I, and occasionally my cousins, used to share beds as kids as well. Admittedly, largely when we were visiting my Nan and there was a limited amount of space (she had ten grandchildren at the time, and thirteen now), to the point that there were occasionally five of us trying to share a bed. Even now, none of us really have any mental trouble bunking up, though there are practical issues these days.

I was the first to stop, really, because as I got older I became an incredibly restless sleeper, both in terms of tossing and turning, and in terms of things like night terrors. So even when visiting we usually ended up trying to put me out on my own somewhere just so other people had a chance at actually getting some sleep. I still have that problem. There are times I wake up upside down in the bed (I mean lying reversed, not exorcist-levitating or anything).

That would be one hell of a night terror. ;)

Heh. Yup. I am not to my knowledge possessed. Although in hindsight, it would explain a lot ...

My sister and I had a bunk bed growing up. We'd share a bed whenever we went to visit relatives or were in a hotel room. Oh, and we'd share the bottom bunk whenever we'd just watched a particularly scary horror movie.

I've also shared a bed with my mom, several cousins, a couple friends... but I sleep the most comfortably when it's either me or just me and my sister. For everyone else, it's like my body just "knows" they're there, and I end up sleeping a lot more rigidly than I usually do.

Regardless of the quality of sleep I got, it was always perfectly natural.

I still do this when I'm visiting my mom.
I either sleep in her or my sisters bed (they are only two in total).
Oh and I'm also sharing a bed when I'm over at my best friends place.

All I need is my own blanket!

I never shared a bed until I went to University. Since then I've shared beds with pretty much all of my friends (in a non-sexual way). I love sharing a bed and curling up with people. It's lovely. :)

Now I'm married, and I can't sleep unless my husband's there.

Only when on vacation or visiting friends/family with limited space.

I used to share a bed with my brother when we were very little, and if we needed to on vacation we'd share then or we'd share with a parent each.

I also shared a bed with a friend at uni a couple of times because we'd be up late chatting and neither of us could be assed to move so we'd just fall asleep in the other's room.

I'm not terribly good at sharing a bed with someone though because I have a big personal space bubble, but I don't consider it a big deal in a social capacity. it's just sleeping.

Not habitually, but if I was away it was no big deal to. I also slept with my parents when I was sick, even when I was an adult. (Young adult, the last time I was probably twentyish, but still.)

Re: Sleeping Together

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
... should probably reiterate I was SICK sick, I had a very bad 24 hour stomach bug, I'll spare you the details but in hindsight I'm surprised I wasn't hospitalized, and after that I could barely walk alone for several days. So yeah, it's not like I had a cold.

Don't worry about it, I live with my parents and I have at least once in the past year climbed into their bed in the wee hours of the morning after having a particularly bad nightmare. It's kind of hard to remember you're 25 and not 10 when you're half asleep and pretty sure a serial killer was just chasing you.

I used to share a bed with siblings when we were on vacation. It was a drag because they're both very sprawled-out sleepers, arms and legs all over the place, plus snoring. Nothing weird about it, though.

Siblings (and entire families sometimes) sharing beds used to be the norm for a lot of people, you know. Houses were smaller, families bigger, and having a bed all to yourself was a luxury.

I shared a room and bed with my brother when we were much younger. I didn't think anything of it, tbh; at that age we spent most of our time playing video games or watching tv together anyway, so I didn't mind. Now my brother has kids and they each have their own room. I see nothing wrong with that either, but personally it wasn't until I hit my teens (and by that time I had my own room) that I really wanted privacy.

Oh, and I've shared a bed with my mother on vacation, when the house was being renovated, when we had visitors, etc.

Sure. I used to sleep in my mom's bed all the time, for various reasons. I never had any trouble sleeping alone when I moved, though.

I don't have any siblings so I always had my own bed but I have shared bed space with my parents/cousins/other relatives/friends. It's all good as long as no one is a loud snorer.

Not habitually, but I had hockey games early as fuck in the morning as a child, and my dad would take me to the rink. We'd both be exhausted afterwards, and sometimes we'd fall asleep in the same bed watching cartoons. I remember it feeling very comfortable.

Yeah, I shared a bed a number of times with my mum or my aunt. I ended up sharing with no one because I apparently have a terrible habit of being convinced that they have the warm spot and doing my utmost to acquire it...while still asleep. After I kicked her out of bed a number of times, my mum insisted on me sleeping alone.

I hate being cold in bed.

I used to crawl into my mom's bed and sleep next to her when my dad was away on business trips. Granted I stopped doing that when I got into my teens, but I never thought it was weird.

I've slept in friends' beds too, which was fine. But I prefer sleeping in my own bed or next to my husband.

It's standard procedure for me to move into my parents bed when my father's off on business. My mother can't sleep alone and I like that it's roomier than my bed.

Also I'm really lazy, for myself I basically just put a coverlet over the duvet on my bed and get one blanket, but in my parents' bed it's luxury. Especially in winter, with the plushy sheets and like three blankets per person.

Too young to remember when I shared with my older sister because we couldn't afford another bed yet. But it's also not a big deal to share a bed even now. Whenever I'm at a hotel or my big sis', it's not uncommon for us to share (even with the lil sis too. or one of us will take the air mattress, preferably me). Same with camping if we're together.

I don't mind sharing a bed, especially if someone doesn't mind, but I'd rather sleep by myself since I'd rather not have to worry about personal space of the other person being invaded because I do gravitate toward heat and snuggle the shit out of it. Makes for stressful dreaming imo. Also i have to wear more clothes than usual.

Not family-specific, but I've also bunked up with acquaintances and ride-shares to save money on hotels/motels. The best sleeping pals are the ones who mutually agree on allowing and not fussing over accidental body contact in smaller spaces.
