Sort of on topic/sort of off topic:

I'm watching the original right now and I cannot tell Apollo or Starbuck apart until someone says a name. Their faces blend together and their voices are similar. It's really bothering me since I've got four episodes left of this show.

Should I watch the reboot/reimagined series?

One is blond (Starbuck), the other brunet (Apollo)? Do you have a problem distinguishing between different colors? I've heard that a large percentage of men do...

Apart from which, I have to admit the actors were fairly similar looking: sort of Hollywood-y conventionally handsome, tanned and slim, same height, similar haircuts etc.

Without calling myself a fan of the original (well, I watched a lot of episodes, whereas I've never been able to force myself to watch more than 5 minutes of the reboot, so I guess it may seem as if I am a fan of the original), I'd say it's practically a plot point: their friendship is a central theme of the series even though their backgrounds are very different and their personalities are near opposite.

But their looks are fairly similar apart from the difference in coloring and where you find one you generally find the other as if they were conjoined twins, which is why they are often paired when flying and playing sports etc?

And I cannot help you regarding the value of watching the reboot, but it sounds as if there is very little in common between the two series apart from the names.

A lot of people seem to like the reboot, but you should consider them entirely unrelated series and characters. On the plus side, Starbuck and Apollo are of different genders in the reboot which might make them easier to distinguish for you?

Just don't expect any similarity between the two series apart from the re-using of some names and concepts (eg: Cylons in the reboot are an entirely different thing from Cylons in the original).

The characters, central story lines, episodic plots, relationships -romantic and otherwise- and all the important concepts are in fact entirely different, though a lot of people will point out that the main difference is that the original was an unpretentious space western, whereas the reboot was real sci-fi, both more ambitious and of higher quality overall (better character development, better pacing, some excellent acting and just much better writing... )

Having said all, I just cannot force myself to watch it, but that's just me.

Thanks! No, I can differentiate color, I'm just face blind. I know Starbuck is blond and Apollo has brown hair, but sometimes the lighting is so bad or they're wearing helmets and I can't tell. The worst part is that they dress the same usually. I'm starting to tell them apart by their cadence of speech (which is actually how I tell who's who of identical twins)

Well, it's true that military uniforms do not help! And neither do helmets when they are flying, you're absolutely right.

I guess the main way to differentiate them if you cannot see their hair color is to assume the reckless, joking, adventure-seeking, flirting, happy-go lucky dialog comes from Starbuck whereas the responsible, grown-up, take-charge, duty and family orientated stuff comes from Apollo.

Admittedly both their personalities are pretty cliched, but you may already have noted that these two characters were rather predictable: the original BSG series may have been rather pedestrian -it as targeted at kids, not adults like the reboot- but what we lost in surprise and character development, was compensated by a reliable character and story consistency, both of which may seem rather outdated nowadays...

:D

I vote for you to watch the reboot if only for your own benefit-- Apollo is a man, Starbuck is a woman.
