'Robert's Rules of Order'?

It's a manual of parliamentary procedure, most widely used in the US. Basically, if you have some kind of meeting or committee in the United States, odds are it'll be run according to some form of Robert's Rules of Order.

It's a set of rules for how a meeting should be conducted, stating things like who's in charge of what, especially who can speak and when. The bigger a group is, the more useful the rules can be. Groups will sometimes have a bylaw stating that meetings are to be conducted by Robert's Rules.

...I seem to have made it my life's goal to make sure that no meeting is ever conducted by the rules in my presence.

I think we could have fun at meetings :)

Or at least we would both be less bored. :)

I remember my sister telling me that she really wasn't THAT annoyed by that Jar Jar Binks character.

That was 15 years ago. I still haven't forgiven her, and I won't...ever...

So, I think your totally fine. ;)

I was 8 when the first movie came out, and 11 when the second one came out. I named my first Neopets account after his manner of speech. I loved him.

Now, I find him annoying, but what I'm saying is that he had a demographic.

For reference, I'm a girl and I hated episode III. My tastes grew up.

Oh, I can see how the character might be fun for kids. :) I saw 'A New Hope' when I was seven and I loved the Jawas.

Well, you say that, but considering they had Reader's Digest Condensed Books in the original dust jackets on the coffee table, I don't see why they *wouldn't* have a copy of Robert's Rules of Order. (Why yes, I'm still annoyed by that one ten years later...)

ROFLOLOLOL so glad I never picked up the reboot.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's a bit over-the-top.

AYRT

To be fair, the 1980s-inspired clothing in weird colours, and the Hunt for Red October military intercom (they have SPACE FIGHTERS but still communicate via rotary phone okaaaay) combined with the Cylons being so high-tech they're indistinguishable from humans, IDK. It just...irked me, and I never could quite put my finger on why, every time I turned it on, there was just something ... off ... that made me recoil, and I never picked it up. All the little things, like this, probably did my subconscious in.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The one thing I can comment on is the phones, since there was an in-universe explanation. Galactica was alone in using outdated tech, which is why it survived the attack on the colonies: modern tech, which was both cordless and networked, was vulnerable, and had been used against humanity in the original war.

I don't get your comment on 1980s-inspired clothing in weird colors, however...?

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC, the newer Pegasus was also shown to have the same old rotary-style phones. But they'd been fighting the Cylons for some time at that point, and Cain could've had her retrofitted with the old gear for exactly the same reason.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Sci fi showing people in the future using tech/fashion that completely dates it as a product of its time is a pretty common thing for the genre though. There's a whole tvtropes page for it. BSG is hardly the worst case.

Not sure what you're talking about?

Ugh I do this a lot actually. I just remember an argument or something and still feel irritated about it. I think it's normal, just don't let it consume your life.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of on topic/sort of off topic:

I'm watching the original right now and I cannot tell Apollo or Starbuck apart until someone says a name. Their faces blend together and their voices are similar. It's really bothering me since I've got four episodes left of this show.

Should I watch the reboot/reimagined series?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
One is blond (Starbuck), the other brunet (Apollo)? Do you have a problem distinguishing between different colors? I've heard that a large percentage of men do...

Apart from which, I have to admit the actors were fairly similar looking: sort of Hollywood-y conventionally handsome, tanned and slim, same height, similar haircuts etc.

Without calling myself a fan of the original (well, I watched a lot of episodes, whereas I've never been able to force myself to watch more than 5 minutes of the reboot, so I guess it may seem as if I am a fan of the original), I'd say it's practically a plot point: their friendship is a central theme of the series even though their backgrounds are very different and their personalities are near opposite.

But their looks are fairly similar apart from the difference in coloring and where you find one you generally find the other as if they were conjoined twins, which is why they are often paired when flying and playing sports etc?

And I cannot help you regarding the value of watching the reboot, but it sounds as if there is very little in common between the two series apart from the names.

A lot of people seem to like the reboot, but you should consider them entirely unrelated series and characters. On the plus side, Starbuck and Apollo are of different genders in the reboot which might make them easier to distinguish for you?

Just don't expect any similarity between the two series apart from the re-using of some names and concepts (eg: Cylons in the reboot are an entirely different thing from Cylons in the original).

The characters, central story lines, episodic plots, relationships -romantic and otherwise- and all the important concepts are in fact entirely different, though a lot of people will point out that the main difference is that the original was an unpretentious space western, whereas the reboot was real sci-fi, both more ambitious and of higher quality overall (better character development, better pacing, some excellent acting and just much better writing... )

Having said all, I just cannot force myself to watch it, but that's just me.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! No, I can differentiate color, I'm just face blind. I know Starbuck is blond and Apollo has brown hair, but sometimes the lighting is so bad or they're wearing helmets and I can't tell. The worst part is that they dress the same usually. I'm starting to tell them apart by their cadence of speech (which is actually how I tell who's who of identical twins)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's true that military uniforms do not help! And neither do helmets when they are flying, you're absolutely right.

I guess the main way to differentiate them if you cannot see their hair color is to assume the reckless, joking, adventure-seeking, flirting, happy-go lucky dialog comes from Starbuck whereas the responsible, grown-up, take-charge, duty and family orientated stuff comes from Apollo.

Admittedly both their personalities are pretty cliched, but you may already have noted that these two characters were rather predictable: the original BSG series may have been rather pedestrian -it as targeted at kids, not adults like the reboot- but what we lost in surprise and character development, was compensated by a reliable character and story consistency, both of which may seem rather outdated nowadays...

:D

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I vote for you to watch the reboot if only for your own benefit-- Apollo is a man, Starbuck is a woman.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that person's complaint is so outstandingly stupid that I will probably remember it in ten years too.
