HDU. I LOVE AMY.

I think she's a great character.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-10 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I have only seen a few episodes, so perhaps I shouldn't really comment, but I think if she were essentially a foil for Peralta, she would come across as the rule-adhering, fun-ruiner character, a role which is frequently given to women in shows like this. I am glad that they have averted that trope, though I would like to see her character fleshed out more.

Amy's amazing, get outta here.

Nooooo! Amy is awesome.

I like Amy a lot but she is pretty clearly the weak link of the show. Which still isn't that bad - it's a really great ensemble. She's just not quite as well integrated into the cast as the rest of the group.

Also really really did not dig on her and Jake as a romantic pairing

I felt the Sarge was the weak link. His characterization was basically been "scared of everything" until they cured him of that, now he just is kinda there. He doesn't add anything, they don't need him to be the voice of reason, because Holt does that well enough himself. I'd be happy to lose him from the line up. I'd also like to lose either Hitchcock or Scully, they don't need both of them for the washed up hack line. Preferably keeping Scully, because the actor is more memorable.

And I find Sarge basically AMAZING, so, to each their own, I guess!

Eh, to me, the sarge works fine as a background character. They could probably expand his character but he works decently for me. And Hitchcock and sully are such background characters that it's hard for me to object to them. They fulfill their role exactly: ridiculous comic relief background characters no one takes seriously.

The thing with Amy is she's very important to the show. She's the third most important character. The good thing is that her character is already mostly there. They just need to get better at throwing her together with other characters.

I love Sarge. I really like how he and the Captain are basically the Team Mom and Dad (and have even been referred to as such in one episode). But then I have a weak spot for characters who are badass and dorky at the same time and who love their family more than anything (much like Hughes from FMA)

Well they've only done 13 episodes, that isn't really long enough to work out who plays off who properly yet. We'll see how things go when they come back for season 2. FWIW, I personally think Gina works better with Peralta and Amy works better with Holt, in terms of personality, so I hope they swap that around a bit. In terms of actual police work, I prefer Boyle and Peralta.

It is still a pretty good show, I just wish there was more fan activity.

I thought it was a full season? I definitely feel like I watched more than 13 episodes.

Why do you refer to the female characters by their first names and the male characters by their last names?

Awww, I love Amy. I was expecting to hate her in the beginning. I thought she was going to be a stiff, no fun, do anything to advance my career even stab Peralta in the back jerk cliche. But she turned out to be adorable. Her brown nosing the Captain could have back fired and made her seem awful but she comes across as an eager puppy. She's got a good heart. She's smart. And she's sweet.
I wouldn't say that she is just "there" at all.

Pretty much this. The show really knows how to draw out the humor and heartwarming from Amy's behavior and ambition. :)

+1

I thought she was annoying at first, but I like that she's portrayed as a person who genuinely cares about her job and coworkers despite the fact that she's a bit of a suck up (most of the time when there's a brown nosing character in a show, they're portrayed as a ladder climber who doesn't really give a shit about what it takes to get ahead. I like that Amy is ambitious but she wants to do her job the right way in order to move the ranks)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
But why does she have to be a foil? I think she's great as is.

I think they've just not been great enough at developing ensemble storylines. Everything kind of revolves around Peralta and/or Cpt. Holt, and the rest haven't been given enough to do yet. I'm hoping for stronger writing for the ensemble for season two.

Why "should" she be anything for Jake? Why can't she just be a character in her own right?

Why are you calling him Jake?

I agree. She's just there. She's not engaging or interesting enough for me to care about.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
She is somewhat dull, especially compared to how incredibly funny most of the other characters on the show are. But I don't find her terrible.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree, OP. I think Amy is a great character in her own right, as well as a good foil to Jake. Plus, throughout the rest of the first season, she does get character development. It shows that she is more than just a 'go-getter' or an over-achiever, She remains smart and competent, but learns how to gain self-confidence, not worrying about over doing things or failing to meet one's standards. (Of course, it's not an immediate change, but gradual, hopefully.)

Then again, I can relate to her. I understand her ambition, as well as the pressure of meeting standards and/or going beyond to impress others.

Also, I like the chemistry between Jake and Amy. It's dynamic yet realistic, or at least relatable. I've noticed that their relationship kinda parallels Jim and Pam from the Office, given that the writers are the same.

Whoops, I rambled on!

I think she's a good character - not the greatest but given who she is up against, that isn't that much of a mark against her. She and Jake play off each other, though I personally enjoy her relationship with Rosa more.
