Exactly. I've seen some great fury art, but fact is that for a whole bunch of people furry porn is basically looking at bestiality and that's just not their thing.

As a furry, I agree with this 100%.

Whenever I see furry anything I think about that episode of CSI with the fur pile, bodily fluids and what not...

Furry porn makes furry fandom a no go.

I just don't understand how "furry" is considered to be a fandom in and of itself. For example, I'm into TMNT and Ushio & Tora, but I don't think that makes me a furry. Now, if I dressed up in one of those fur suits and went on about how I had the sould of a silver fox, then I'd be one. But most people don't seem to see it that way, so I dunno *shrugs*

Yeah, this. At most, it could be considered a lifestyle choice, given some people are pretty serious about some aspects of it. Which is fine, that's their choice/prerogative, and I don't think much of it. I do think a good portion of how it became widely known as a fandom is probably due to the furry lifestylers who made the whole furry thing their entire lives. No more different than a sports fan that's dedicated to their team and whatnots, but the furries from the 2004-2008 time period were... something else. Anyone remember 'Fursecution'?

Side note: A lot of my favorite characters are what one could consider to be 'furry' (even ones who are aliens, but look like anthros), I have a couple personal characters who are 'funny animals', and I enjoy cartoons and games with anthro characters, but I don't consider myself a "furry" or part of the furry subculture.

I don't know, makes about as much sense to me as MCU, American Animation, or J-pop fandoms.

"Subculture" is a better word, but maybe it sounds more elaborate or subversive than the people in it would prefer.

Blame the fandom totem pole, furries are on the bottom and are thus fair game.

because furries shove their kink onto everyone else and expect them to tolerate it, then get pissy when people either say they're not interested or to keep their bedroom habits to themselves.

It's the association with porn and persecution complexes. I have a few friends who are a part of the local fur community, as well as those online too, so it's not like I'm unaware that it's not as unpleasant as many make it out to be. Although I'm not a furry, I'm a fan of the art and will take commissions from people who want me to draw their fursona.

The prevalence of stupidity is reasonable reason for dismissal though. Bullying, not so much of course.

Your problem, OP, is that you've assumed that furries are "new," in the sense that they've only existed since the advent of the internet. But that's not true. The concept of "furry" has been around since at least 1980, which predated every fandom you've listed in your secret.

Furries get hate because people find them weird, not because they're associated with certain fandoms.

are you kidding? there are a lot of really good artists who draw furry stuff. I don't even partake and I know I've seen it. it ain't about the art. it's like above commenters say - it's about the porn. an anthropomorphized animal creature in any fandom, cartoony/child-friendly or not, is not automatically furry fodder. It's what furries do with/to said characters that makes them furry.

There's plenty of great furry art/artists. There's shitty stuff too, like in any fandom. I haven't found the distribution any different from other areas of fandom/the internet. Most of everything is shit.
