F!S Anon Meme (the Tenth?)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it!

Performance in a Leading Role - Sherlock fandom

There's nothing terrible about it, but...it's a Hollywood Actor AU, and it's not even particularly clever or metaphorical, nor is there any significant character development of any kind. Or satire. Or parallels to the canon show. It's just "actors land cool roles and fall in love and come out and there's some homophobia but mostly cutesiness and sex." AND WHO CARES ABOUT A HOLLYWOOD ACTOR AU SO MUCH THAT THEY WOULD LIST IT AS THEIR FAVORITE FANFIC EVER LIKE WHAT.

God yes. It's not even well written. Also, hollywood actors WTF?

There's a similar one in X-Men First Class fandom, where Charles and Erik meet playing characters called James and Michael in a film and fall in love. It's hundreds of thousands of words long and painfully out of character and over the top. Three or four different popular authors worked on it and while I like some of their work on its own, the story is such tripe, but is so acclaimed and I can't for the life of me figure out why. It's not even well written and eventually just devolves into poorly written sex scene after poorly written sex scene.

I love it, but then I love AUs. Most of my favorite fics are AUs, and it's up there.

Why does any fic have to be metaphorical? That's a strange requirement.

A fic certainly doesn't "have" to be metaphorical, but it doesn't even have that going for it as a reason to be so popular.

Why do you love it? I'm legitimately curious.

ayrt

I didn't say I thought it was crap or anything. Just that I can't see anything special about it (like, for example, clever or insightful metaphors with the canon material) that would explain why people are always going "HOMG THIS IS SO AMAAAAAAZING" when it's just a fairly-well-written standard AU romance.

I certainly don't think being metaphorical is a "requirement", even for AUs. Just that if it was metaphorical, I might understand its popularity more.

Wait, is that by the same author who wrote that super popular Brokeback Mountain fic?
