I really really dislike the Roy/Riza pairing in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. Not because I ship Roy/Ed or any dumb shit like that, but because;

a) I hate it when a male/female pair MUST be in love in order to protect each other and can't just stay close friends
b) Their relationship is unhealthy on quite a few levels and no one seems to notice
c) Riza's whole backstory and current arc revolves around Roy and I want her to have a life OUTSIDE of him

But the worst part was the fans who squeed at the Roy/Riza in every chapter even back when it was ambiguous and started declaring it canon, and laughed at anyone who thought it wasn't an obvious done deal since chapter 5. Especially when they took Riza's threat of murder/suicide as a romantic moment that 'confirmed' the pairing.

I think you just summed up my problems with most of the canon pairings in the manga better than I could have. Ed/Winry has all those too, which I realized slowly and to my growing disappointment because I loved them in the 2003 anime.

Not into FMA (yet) but THIS. Especially shounen anime for instance. If there's two characters, a guy and a girl, who are friends, or colleagues, or whatever, it's like there always has to be a romantic link between them on at least one side.

Guys and girls just can't be 100% platonic friends without any romantic feelings it seems in that kind of anime.

I love the hell out of the pairing because the two of them hit practically every button I have, but I can still get behind all your arguments.

I love this pairing and I've written it, but I also think that most of what gets written in the pairing is terrible. Because it doesn't recognize the fucked up nature, because the fans are hilariously obsessed with it being canon WHEN IT'S NOT and because so many people who ship it are obsessed with the characters an OTP who never loves anyone else when there's plenty of room in canon for them to have other relationships.

Also people love to write super-heteronormative 'oh surprise she's pregnant which clearly is not something that would put a cramp in her style as a military officer at all' fics for this pairing and it makes me nuts.

(That said, there is a lot of fic I love for the pairing but it's almost all one-shots. The lack of epic casefic with UST for these two saddens me to no end because there's so much room for it.)
