I was gonna reference Chrono Crusade, but I just looked it up and it's actually supposed to be Protestant. I guess there's still Blue Exorcist.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That was supposed to be Protestant? Weren't there, like, nuns?
feotakahari: (Default)

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-07-15 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, a supposedly Protestant organization had nuns. It's manga; there aren't a lot of Christians in the local audience to cry foul.

An order of gun-toting demon-fighting nuns, if I remember.

Could be it's because I grew up Catholic, but I'm pretty sure it was a Catholic order too, and I'm getting only "Catholic" when I research anything in regards to a religion in the anime.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree.

Also, I don't think that's true.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-07-15 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with anon.

Then again, I've long had the impression some anime series out that use Christian religious symbolism -irregardless if it's Protestant or Catholic in origin- solely use it because it "looks cool" without really ever thinking of implications (much in the same way folks in the west use Eastern Religious symbolism for about the same reasons), so I don't think about/dwell on it too much.

tI saw tons and tons of crosses in Japan, mostly on people who probably don't have much connection to actual Christianity (if only because Japan doesn't have that many Christians, haha).

Kabbalistic imagery is almost worse, in a way...

I don't know if that's exactly right, but I do know that Japanese media has some breathtakingly weird ideas about what's involved in both forms of Christianity.

I actually like that it's capable of shocking me from time to time, for its sheer casual disregard of reality.

Japan's portrayal of "Christianity" in anime/manga/games is so utterly terrible and has zero connections of reality, I'm not really sure what you're trying to prove...? I mean they mostly Do Not Get It very, very hard.

I wouldn't call it exactly terrible because it's clear they have no idea what they are talking about. And are just making it all up and slapping titles like "Nun/Sister," "Priest/Father," and "Saint" because, darn it, it sounds cool. They always go with Catholicism rather than Islam or Judaism because Catholicism has a extremely well known pop culture connections with Demons, Angels and monsters. Though in reality, all the Abrahamic religions have those same connections. But Hollywood has barely tackled that. The one demon possession movie involving an exorcism that didn't involve Catholics but rather a different Abrahamic religion that I can think of was The Possession. Outside of that, I am at a loss.

I guess as a Catholic, I should be offended. And sometimes, I am. (Seriously, the some of the nun outfits in Trinity Blood are just an insult.) But for the most part, it's interesting to see what someone who has no clue about how the belief system works, make up a story around said belief system.

I'm not sure how often Christianity portrayed in Japanese media is SUPPOSED to have connections to reality. It's like a Western portrayal of East Asian spirituality - over the top, stereotyped, taking the exotic bits and playing them up. In Japan, Christianity is "fashionable" and exotic. Only like 2% of actual Japanese people are Christians, after all. The rest don't care. They get married in "churches" to be trendy, and wear crucifixes and so on, but it's just "cool". I don't think anyone would try to claim it's real Christianity.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen enough examples to judge whether this is or isn't the case (I don't think Black Lagoon, Ghost Hunt, 07 Ghost and Trinity Blood count as a wide enough sample base), but I think that most anime/manga writers tend to know as much about Christianity as I know about Buddhism or Shintoism. Which is to say, not a lot, beyond the general gist and some of the symbolism.

The other thing is that, historically speaking, if you want a monolithic organisation with global power or close to it, in the form of a Christian Church, Catholicism is the branch of Christianity you want. The various forms of Protestantism tend to be too fragmentary, and they don't quite have the blood-soaked romance of the Crusades or the Conquest of the Americas or various Papal wars throughout history. If you want an antagonistic Church of Evil (TM) based on a Christian faith, Catholicism is the way to go, maybe? Well, unless you're setting this in either England or Germany, where it can go either way depending on the time period. Things get a bit more complicated in Eastern Europe/Central Asia, as well.

And before anyone asks, I'm Irish Catholic.

The only anime I've ever really watched with catholic themes was Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne and I didn't even realize that she was supposed to be Joan of Arc reincarnated until I read it online.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Never finished Trinity Blood, but wasn't that about a Catholic group trying to protect everyone? There was also Samurai Champloo. There are probably others, whether or not they're accurate.

I could've sworn this was common in Western media too. Anti-heroes are everywhere and the Catholic church makes a pretty good antagonist, from a story standpoint. Although they tend to be more critical of certain aspects of the church, since they're more familiar with it, and will usually have an example of an ideal/more open-minded Catholic.

Wait, Japan is aware that there are Christians out there who are not Catholic?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming that by "Japan," you mean "manga," because Nagasaki's substantial Catholic population would probably not agree with this.

Unless the work is set in/around Nagasaki or written by an author from that area, I'm assuming any random manga artist knows very little about Christianity and is making up everything, which is how we get nuns who can hear confessions and vampire-hunting priests. There rarely seems to be a religious agenda and more of a "let's just do whatever seems coolest." Which often results in hilarity because seriously? Nuns hearing confessions? This Catholic anon is too busy laughing to be offended.

MTE. Look at that lady with her chimera body and one-legged pants. Look at the No Neck Sisters to the left and right of her. Check out Tinyhand McGee in the Hawaiian shirt.

Or they just make Catholics straight-up ruthless killers. That was probably just Hellsing, though.
