Honey Lemon's VA is Hispanic, so there's a good chance that Honey Lemon might be Hispanic.

Here we go...

You go to Europe, where Spaniards and Portugee come from, and they are considered white. There are Sicilians that are darker than most Hispanics, and they are considered white, how come we are calling them non-white now? Hispanics are whites.

Sorry, but it seems like a poor excuse to keep whinging.

No, they're right. I don't know in what dimension being Spanish or Portuguese makes you not white, just by default of speaking another language. There's a lot of mixing with other Mediterranean ethnicity, but they still majorly consider themselves white (even if they have tanned skin), to the point that Spanish people are famously discriminatory against Latin Americans.

Yes and no. Eastern hemisphere Hispanics are mostly white Europeans. Western hemisphere Hispanics are mostly of pre-Columbian ethnic groups. Non-whites. (Again, emphasis on MOSTLY on both. Seeing how I am Puerto Rican and white with a straight shot back to Spain. I know they can be both.)

In short, they are both.

Re: Big Hero 6 White Washing Accusations

most people in Central and South America are not primarily descended from Spanish or Portuguese people, though

Re: Big Hero 6 White Washing Accusations

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Then they are not hispanic, they are first nation peoples. Possibly mixed race hispanic(white) and first nationers in some cases, but if they are pure hispanic then they are white. If they're pure first nationer, then they aren't; but then they are not hispanic either.

it's nice that you've managed to find a way to be pedantically correct that has no relation at all to the real world

Uh, no

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Hispanic" means you come from a Spanish-speaking culture.

You can be pretty much any color or ethnic background. Some Peruvians are descended from a mix of Japanese, Quechua, and non-Spaniard European. Urban Colombians are often a mix of so many different "races" they look like none of them in particular. Argentines are usually white, and their ancestors could be from pretty much any part of Europe. Cubans and Dominicans can be as dark as someone from the Gambia. They're all "Hispanic."

The whole racial separation thing is for wacky cultures like Anglo-Americans. Then they meet someone from a Spanish-speaking country that never had anti-miscegenation laws, they don't know what to make of them, so they call them "Hispanic."

I know ~American~ views of race are irrelevant, but the term Hispanic was officially coined by the US government in the 1970s for anyone of Mexican, Puerto Rican, or any Spanish-speaking South American descent. This includes but is not limited to white people, and literally on every official US form that asks for your race, "Hispanic" and "White (not of Hispanic origin)" are separate categories. In America Hispanic people are not officially white, even when we are.

go fuck yourself

hispanics are white and that confers white privelige

i am sick to death of people propping up hispanics as some sort of diversity, "differently white" is still fucking WHITE

And since when did that matter. racism isn't always about skin colour. I know how my country treats polish people to know that it isn't always about skin colour.

Lol, that's right, there are no black latinos. I forgot about that.

Historically, there are hispanics of european, african, and native american (south/central america and Caribbean) descent. some have all, some have one or two, either way phenotype does not always reveal genotype.

In short, one may be a white hispanic, but you do not know what their genetic makeup is like.

Don't forget Asians. Go to Peru and you'll find yourself knee deep in Japanese-Peruvians. Heck, growing up, when I visited my grandparents in Puerto Rico, I used to go into town for Chinese food. There was a family running a Chinese restaurant with two kids who spoke only Spanish. Barely a lick of Chinese and absolutely no English. And they considered themselves as Puerto Rican as their neighbors. Which considering how diverse the island is, they are right. (You go to the mountains and you are going to find names like O'Reilly and Sullivan thanks to the Irish coming in droves almost two hundred years ago. They don't speak a lick of English either and consider themselves first and foremost Puerto Rican.)

AYRT

This I know, I'm Puerto Rican myself with an Irish last name (but that side of my family is black/habao).

There has been plenty of mixing on the islands (and mainlands) (my cuban friend is chinese somewhere down the line, tipo great grandfather). Heck, I've got some Arab blood in me too! But that's my point, there is so much mixing, it's ignorant to say that a person is just white. A person has no idea what's running through their DNA.

Bot to sound like a creep (bc I am on anon) but what part of PR are you from?

I was born in Ceba. At the now defunct Rosie Roads. Dad was Navy. Mom had family there all over the island though my grandparents are from Isabela. That's where I used to go for the Chinese food. It was just like across the square from the church, if I remember right. The restaurant was next to a five and dime. It has been a long time since I've been there since most of my family moved to Florida. Because we are stereotypically Puerto Rican. Born there, mom's family moved to New York and New Jersey. Then some moved back to the island but most moved to Florida.

Most of the Hispanic people I know are not white at all, but there are plenty who are in Los Angeles, which is where I live. Here, white-Hispanic doesn't come with white privilege because Hispanic = Latino, with little bearing on skin color, to determine racial interaction and standing.

While I know this doesn't bear out everywhere, in my experience the language you speak and culture you identify with plays a lot into what nationality or ethnicity you define yourself as. I'm a first-generation American child of parents who immigrated here in their adulthood, but I feel American, not Indian-American. I value my ethnic ancestry, but I don't identify with it at all. Hell, I identify more with the Hispanic and Latino cultures I was raised around than the Indian culture I come from but had little connection to growing up.

So while many Hispanics are white in appearance, that doesn't actually mean that by default they are white as a culture, or get white privilege. (And ironically enough, a lot of the white-Hispanic girls I know are always trying to get a tan and turn their skin darker).
