Big Hero 6 White Washing Accusations

So I'd actually meant to post this as a secret, only I forgot. And now I don't want to have to wait another week. So here it is un-anon, because hardly any of my secrets are actually real secrets:



A bunch of posts have been circulating around on tumblr, accusing Big Hero 6 of white washing. Because Honey Lemon is white, whereas in the original comics she was a blonde Japanese girl. And even though Hiro and Gogo are both Asian and Wasabi is black, this is still the most TERRIBLE CRIME EVER and Disney is AT IT AGAIN.

And I'm just kind of like... the fuck?

Like okay, Frozen, I can sort of understand even I won't complain myself because yeah. They're 100% white. But this?

You've got two women, two men, and two genderless main characters. And then also two Asian, one black, one white, and two aracial characters. (Although one could joke that the robot is white too.)

ATLA was white washing. Dragonball was white washing. The movie 21 about the college kids who counted cards was white-washing. Akira, if it ever gets made, will be white washing.

This is turning a blonde girl white and, okay, moving the location from Tokyo to San Fransokyo. (Which I'm honestly cool with because the designs look amazing and I'm hoping it will come out like a futuristic 3D version of LoK's Republic City.)

I can't help but roll my eyes at the indignation people are already feeling.

Fredzilla is actually a white guy in a costume. Official art and trailer came out on Monday clarifying.

I don't think POC should be interchangeable.

Now I've read the original comic.

It's boring, Orientalist, WEIRDLY sexualized tripe, and I have no problem with Disney making it not shit.

But if we've gotten people used to all white superhero casts, I don't see why everyone couldn't be Japanese (although Fred was originally Ainu and that had it's own issues), but i'm not horribly bothered by it.

I'm more bothered by the reuse of the female model with such minor changes.

Ah, thanks for that about Fredzilla. The posts mentioned a second white dude but didn't explain, so I'd assumed it was a secondary character.

And yeah, I don't think they should necessarily be interchangeable either. But it should get its own term; not fall under the generic white washing labels, which is what I've seen a lot of posts do.

But then I also think there's a difference in race switching characters between say, an Indian in the original canon who gets changed to a Mexican actor on screen because "all brown people are the same" and this, where (to the best of my knowledge) it was originally an all Asian cast and one of the Asian characters gets switched to a black character for the sake of diversity.

And I know that comes with its own set of issues as well and you get into the whole Hollywood pitfall of execs seeing a film with an all Asian cast and marketing it as an "Asian" movie and so on and so forth. And that Disney has made films like Aladdin and Mulan and they both did fine, so there really is no excuse to mix and match races for Big Hero 6. But I also think it's good, especially with the influx of superhero movies, to have that mixed representation, since as far as POC go there's like... what? Nick Fury, Heimdall, and Falcon? And that one other Asian background character in Thor?

(And now I'm kind of disappointed myself with the Fredzilla news. It would have been amazing if they'd have gone full on Captain Planet and made him Latino, given the California influence.)

Sorry if my thoughts are all over the place and don't make much sense. Didn't even go into Honey Lemon's stock female character model, but yeah I'm with you on that.

There could've been an Ainu character? Aw man, now I'm a little sad about that. I don't even think they're represented all that much in Japanese media.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid. I mean, Honey lemon still has the facial structure of Rapunzel and two inferior characters, but they actually doing well with the others.
I'm hype anyway, even if tumblr is going to erase minorities they supposedly care about.

Akira might actually not be about white washing. But only because so much fan backlash before.

Also, no. people who were upset about Frozen were just stupid. White people have fairy tales and those tales are full of white people. Live with it.

Making a non-white character white is still whitewashing. The presence of other non-white characters doesn't negate that.

True. I think what got to me was that the couple posts that came up on my dash explicitly compared it to the Last Airbender re: the whitewashing.

And I was just like "wooooah, wooooah, wooooah." Okay, both started up with all Asian casts, but TLA made every single main character who was a good guy white. Every single one. And they made every single villain (no, you don't get excused for anything in future seasons) dark-skinned. And not even one since race of "dark-skinned." They called for Indians, Middle Easterners, Latinos, "Mediterrean if you're dark enough", to fill out the ranks of the bad guy army.

IDK, I feel like conflating Big Hero 6 to that is just an insult.

Honey Lemon's VA is Hispanic, so there's a good chance that Honey Lemon might be Hispanic.

Some people just need to be outrage because that is their hobby. Nothing more. I, highly, HIGHLY, doubt they were fans of the comic since the comic is one of Marvel's more obscure titles. And frankly, before the movie, I never came across it on tumblr.

Also, I want to watch this movie. Baymax looks adorable.

Honestly my biggest question is why anyone would look at Big Hero 6 in the first place and say "Yes, THIS is the marvel property Disney's animation studios need to work with!"

Well, they sort of just took the concept and seem to be doing away with all the icky stuff. I think it's pretty neat that if you own something that was deeply flawed, you can decide to try something new with it.

I wonder what the thought process behind making it into the next big movie was. Shoot, I still want to know why they picked Hunchback of Notre Dame to make into a kid's movie. Just... why?

People are missing the point of revision by ten miles, at least. People of color aren't interchangeable, no, but these characters aren't based on real-life people. There's no one real that the movie is 'interchanging'. They took the concept of the comic books and revisited into something else that could appeal to a wider audience.

This wank-off is ridiculous to the point of being offensive. "Well, we could have had 5 Asian characters with a story set in Tokyo!!" which, yeah, but does that mean that you're perfectly ok with black people not getting a character? Also, are these people aware that the comic is based on anime/manga, so if you wanted to see a story set in Tokyo with Asian characters you could....watch an anime. But I guess that an entire multi-million dollar industry doesn't count because it wasn't made by disney.

You know, has anyone's real name (not their superhero alias) for the movie been revealed yet? How do we know, say, Honey Lemon won't have the same name as in the comics, and is therefore presumably a blonde Japanese girl just like in the comics? It's not likely, but I'd love to see everyone backpedal for assuming she's been whitewashed when there's no solid proof of it yet.
