Until July 31st on the Origins website. Create an account, and download the program. Then go to your account and click "redeem product code", the code is "I-Love-The-Sims". :D

This makes me super happy because I've never had a chance to play the Sims before? And now I have a house. :D Plus I was able to add my cat to the game!

The only downside is, with Windows 8, (at least for me), it's not immediately compatible, so you have to do a work around, but eh, it's still worth it for me honestly. I'm just happy that I can finally play the Sims! :D

I can't believe that EA is giving something away for free. It's shaking the foundation of my understanding of the world. Someone needs to go take their temperature.

Apparently it's because they're no longer going to supper Sims 2? I think? I'm not entirely sure on the details, but from now on, while you can call tech support, I don't think that they'll be doing things like patches, and what not, but I don't know fore sure: I'm not a video game person, I'm a person that went "SIMS? FOR FREE??? HOT DIGGITY DOG I AM GOING TO SO BE ON THAT" so.... |D

It's because they're no longer officially supporting The Sims 2. Which just means no more patches, bug fixes, or new content. Although, I don't think they've released much of anything for it since Sims 3 took off. Also, every Sims 2 game's key is getting turned into an Ultimate Collection key.

It's kinda blowing my mind too, but I think EA wants more people to use Origin. They give a free game practically every week. Past games were Peggle, Plants vs. Zombies, and Battlefield 3.

It doesn't work on Macs :( I've always wanted to play The Sims.

D: I'm sorry. If it helps, I think the program is like Steam, so maybe you could set up an account + download it for if/when you have access to a PC?

Macs and TS2 don't mix. My game just up and crashed after a few years. I don't think EA really cared to make TS2 workable for Mac users once TS3 came out. This is why they stopped making Mac versions of the expansion packs I think.

Meh. About half of that was due to the fact that the Mac port was developed and distributed by a third party, another half was due to the fact that the Sims franchise always has quality control issues with buggy characters, buggy lots, and database rot.

If I remember right, EA doesn't distribute the Mac port for 2.

I want to do this so bad, but I dont know how it works when I already have the base game and a few EPs from the discs on my hard drive. Do I have to uninstall them? Can I import my current hoods into my digital copy? And is that dangerous if, perhaps, there's a bug in my current hoods? (Sometimes dirty dishes are unselectable, the lawn looks like a series of dartboard, and character thumbnails just look all kinds of wrong either in skin tone or hair color.)

I'm honestly not sure about the answers to any of that, I'm sorry. :( Try maybe asking at the modthesims forums?

Sounds like you have a mod conflict.

But as for how it works: you can get it now and install it later, so long as you beat the deadline. I'm going to just uninstall my current Sims 2 game (after backing up my files) and see how it goes.

Yes, you do have to uninstall to play Origin's Ultimate Collection version, but you can backup your saves. You can follow the directions here: http://help.ea.com/mx/article/how-to-get-the-sims-2-ultimate-collection/

From past experiences, I would just make sure that before you move your saves that you make sure that you save your files when your Sims are in idle mode. What I mean is they're not currently doing an action, they're not queued for anything, they're not in a taxi, and they're defiantly not on a community lot. I've had saves screw up because of that.

And to completely remove your mods/CC, do a fresh install, run it once, then put it back. Just be aware that if you didn't have all the EP/SP that you might want to look into any conflicts. I think Delphi at Mod The Sims had some programs/tools for finding them, but I honestly haven't looked up anything for the Sims 2 in forever. It's probably best to put back things a little at a time, run it to see if there are any errors, then repeat. It's a pain, but then you won't run into many problems later.

Interesting. I've never wanted to play the Sims, but I sure want to play it now that I don't have to pay for the experience of making weird-looking characters look at each other.

That's unfortunate. Could you make another user on your computer, and download it there? And then have a friend of yours change the password until after your thesis is done?

You can redeem the code without downloading or installing the game. You can download/install whenever after that. :)

You can redeem the code and download later. AFAIK it said that July 31st was the dead to redeem it to your account, but you should be able to download it at any time there after.

Ah, I didn't see this when I posted it. I'll just reiterate my post here for anyone that wants the links.

Since some people here like video games and the Sims, I thought I'd let you all know that Origin is giving out The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection (it's all the expansions and stuff packs) away for free. The download is just under 13 GB for anyone that's wondering.

Just go to Origin (http://www.origin.com/), make an account, download the client, and redeem the game with the code I-LOVE-THE-SIMS. I believe it's until the end of the month, July 31st, 2014 at 10AM PDT.

Sims 2 is, in many ways, the apex of the franchise. Sims 3 solved the dissonance of only one family moving forward in time (unless you systematically visited each household in turn). But Sims 2 came out of the box with Strangetown, which quite possibly is maximum Sim insanity packed into a single neighborhood file:

* one alien mpreg with a predetermined second if you send Vidcund Curious to the telescope the first night (the Singles gives you two adult aliens, if you want to jump-start your green-skinned legacy)
* Pollination Tech #9 Smith's warped family tree
* Nervous Subject, a challenge sim with an extreme personality
* suburban family feuds between the Smiths and the Grunts with teen angst all around
* a fully loaded haunted house with the Specters
* and the cherry on top, abducted and mind-wiped Bella Goth randomly wandering the neighborhood.

There were only 3 things that I liked that Sims 3 did and they were largely QoL changes.

1) Create-A-Style (which has now been removed form Sims 4 in favor for game optimization...)
2) No loading screens. It was annoying in Sims 2 when you had an average PC (for the times) and every time you wanted to use the Nightlife lots in the city you'd have to wait for the loading screen.
3) Like you said, the stories that happened simultaneously instead of in their own bubble.

Other than those things, I enjoyed Sims 2 content more.

Downloaded it yesterday, and I am SO EXCITED to get back into this game. All other games I am playing or about to play are going on the backburner for the time being. I only ever had three of the expansion packs, and now I get to experience them all!

I did this and it said I had redeemed it but it's not showing up for me to play :/ I'll wait a little longer, I guess, and then the emailing starts. Thanks for letting us know!
