Me too. It's not a race thing, I swear. Just do we really want the icon of the western world being someone who actually abused and sold women? What the fuck kind of message is that?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
a message every comics-reading neckbeard dudebro can get behind, obviously. because America, I suppose.

*sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
they're not exactly getting behind it, so much as ignoring it

which, I mean, feel free to say that's insufficiently moral, but disregarding the character's past isn't the same as getting behind it

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it's been mentioned in more recent comics, as the other panels show

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
i still feel like 'pimp' is probably not the aspect of the character that 90% of the fandom thinks of or likes, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
na

I don't recall what issue that panel is from (I'm guessing it's from the storyline where Scarlet Witch's influence fucked with Sam's mind and sent him back into his "Snap" Wilson frame of mind) but Snap Wilson was also the alias he used while working in the mob (and, well, a surprising amount of superheros used to be assassins and/or involved with the mafia. Hell, Bucky was a former assassin and he got to be Captain America for a while) so it could have been a reference to his gangster activities rather than anything involved with pimping. This was also around the time he became "anti-cap" and most people kind of just pretend that didn't happen because marvel in general was doing a lot of stupid shit then

I love how people use strawman terms without even realizing that they're using two different words that clash with one another.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
spoken like a typical neckbeard dudebro

go fap into a sweatsock, asswipe

>not understanding sarcasm
>not understanding that dudebros and neckbeards are complete opposites

>greentexting in 2014

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
i could give a fucking rat's ass if you are sarcastic.

neckbeards and dudebros are one and the same. lmao @ you thinking there's a philosophic difference between the two. jesus fucking Christ.

you seem incapable of understanding this.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Neckbeards live in basements.

Dudebros live in frats.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO

ahh, semantics bite me in the arse yet again

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 02:27 am (UTC)(link)

not understanding that dudebros and neckbeards are complete opposites

Really? Explain.

They're not exactly the same to me, but they have many of the same distasteful traits.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
neckbeard is an insult for geeks, dudebro is an insult for bros

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-07-26 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really base my insults on how the person in question perceives himself.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
The neckbeard is the basement dweller stereotype. The dudebro is the fit douchebag that's probably in a frat. They're both misogynist, but their relationship with women are sort of different (neckbeard hates women because none of them want to deal with that mess, dudebro has probably had a relationship with a woman or two because their social skills don't suck but still has weird sexist ideals of what a woman is good for.) They're both misogynist, but they're from such different ends of the spectrum that conflating them is weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
And clearly, distinguishing between nerd misogynists and jock misogynists is of the utmost importance here, and is really what matters.

Not that they both embody the same misogyny. Nope. Not at all.

If you care about the issue, talk about the issue.

You need to get laid

Perhaps Marvel's retooling the character to match up with Movie!Sam's origin as a modern day Vetern?
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

Funny this is, he probably wasn't.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-07-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
You have to admit, given the shenanigans of social conservatives going on right now, the icon of America being someone who abused and commercialized women would actually be fairly accurate.

*ba-dum-TSSH*

The whole "Sam is a pimp" thing came about during a weird old issue in which Sam - who'd thus far been depicted as being a social worker come superhero - was suddenly "revealed" to have a criminal past working for a gang...by the Red Skull, using the Cosmic Cube. Either he was completely lying, or he'd used the Cube to rewrite Sam's past.

And hilariously enough, even then, he wasn't ever said to be a pimp - he was just dressed in clothing that later writers associated with the stereotypes of a pimp. Even if the revelation was true, all it said was that he was a small-time crook before he became a superhero.

It's a weird situation where the crook activities and the social worker activities aren't two parts of his past - they're two separate pasts/realities entirely, so people actually CAN just choose one. For a variety of very good reasons, people pick the social worker one and the crook one just gets dismissed as (in relation to the 616-verse) one of those weird alternate universes that people ultimately ignore because they have no relevance to 616.

I think it is a race thing, but maybe not necessarily your fault that it is.

But part of the reason that it's Falcon is that Falcon's been Cap's sidekick since he first came back. He's a very early black character. Next to Black Panther and Luke Cage, he probably stands the best chance at being an iconic character who is also black, both for longevity's sake, and because of whose book he was in.

Problem is, most of the black characters that go that far back are from an era where we were finally getting black heroes, but unless they were a noble prince from an African country, they had to be "from the street."

Sam's awkward past is more a product of the crappy time in which he was being written than it is an aspect of his character now. Hell, especially after the latest movie.

Icon of the USA, you mean.

The western world is a whole hell of a lot bigger than just you.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
This.
