Every character has weird ass things writers put into their past. They've been around too long for that not to be true. Sam's black to they made him a pimp. The great thing about comics is you can choose to believe he never was one.

Supervillains becoming superheros despite really fucked up or sketchy past actions is an iconic comic-book staple. There are very few people who are completely irredeemable.

Especially one a lot of those things are not defining, consistent characteristics, but one-off situations introduced by one creative team that were so far off the mark, people largely ignore that they happen.

As many people have pointed out, the whole "pimp" thing is one part of Sam Wilson's past that people largely ignore because it doesn't really connect to the rest of his character. It was a ridiculous interpretation of his character put there by a racist creative team, and again, this shit happens all the time.

Hank Pym hitting his wife in the midst of a mental breakdown was something that fit in with his broader story arc and character, so people held onto it. The pimp past thing could have been woven into Sam's past in a workable way (i.e. his social work, which was more crucial to his overall character), but it wasn't woven into future stories and it was too weak to stand on its own, so it was forgotten.

The Red Skull is a guy who tweaked reality with the Cosmic Cube to create "Snap" Wilson, to try and defame Sam, which is something that we will be digging into.


There never was a "Snap" Wilson. "Snap" Wilson was a construct of the Red Skull. He was an attempt to defame Sam. So Sam has a very personal grudge against the Red Skull.

When I was a little kid, I wanted to be like the Falcon. I don't like this way of talking about him.

The "Snap" stories are a very small part of the set of Falcon stories. And they are just weird, honestly. I can buy that they came from a weird race-stereotype place (though white guys in those comics did some strange stuff too). They were a bizarre retcon to begin with. And it wasn't Sam's normal personality. It was either something he was ashamed of, or basically blocked out.

I was reading about this on scans_daily. It's some kind of weird maybe-not-actually-true storyline Steve Englehart came up with and left hanging. Remender's explanation that the Red Skull made it up is pretty reasonable extrapolation of that story.

Apparently Marc DeMatteis had it that Sam sort of had a psychotic break and worked for organized crime for a while. But the whole thing was a voodoo shark.

But if it were where he came from, so what? Redemption is part of idealistic heroic fantasy, too.
