Workout goals

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I am ridiculously out of shape, but dammit, I am going to get to an hour straight on the elliptical machines eventually!

(Yes, I am *that* out of shape. I mean, I could do it on the easy settings, but I don't want to to it on the easy settings, that's cheating.)

I also want to get to 300lb on the leg press, but I don't know if that's realistic.

Anyone else have workout goals?

You can do it! I believe in you!

the question is sadly not if but when

My current goal is to keep increasing endurance so I can keep running. I'm trying to not focus too much on pace or completion time (well, the last part to a certain extent). I keep getting better at my races and I still have trouble believing it. 3 years ago I didn't run nor lift weights. I've come a long way (just need to stop sabotaging it with stress eating).

There's a 90 day challenge at my gym in a couple of weeks. I want to decrease body fat % and get stronger/better on certain strength exercises. Such as barbell squats (starting with 85# one set, 95# sets 2 and 3) and also work my closer to unassisted weight on the pull-up machine. That combined with cardio cross training (elliptical or cross ramp machine, both similar just depends on which gym I go to) and spinning class, and working with my trainer on treadmill workouts, all combines to keep me fit, active, and going!

Long term bench my bodyweight.

Shorter term go more frequently (should be much easier since my new base has a gym on site), and properly eat for gains.

I think 300lbs on the leg press absolutely could be realistic, if you're willing to give yourself some time. Lower body strength tends to be both greater and easier to increase than upper body strength.

Speaking of upper body strength, that's what my goals revolve around currently. I want to be able to do 100 push-ups (not in a single set, mind; I'm working toward five sets of 20 reps) and 4-5 pull-ups in a row. I signed up for an obstacle course race in the fall, so I've got that to motivate me.

Are you already doing the hundredpushups (http://hundredpushups.com/)/twenty pullups (http://twentypullups.com/) programs? I know I've pimped them both here before.

I'm doing the push-ups program (and it's been fantastic so far), but somehow I didn't know about the pull-ups one. Thanks for linking it; I'll have to give it a go!

(Another big help, honestly, has been playing with poi...which I probably talk about too much, but oh well. It's fun and it does your upper body good).

300lbs on leg press is totally realistic. I have the pinnerest legs and I managed to get up to that after a few solid months of strength training.

My goals:

20 pullups (I'm at 11)

100 chest to floor pushups (I'm at 78)

2.4 km in under 10 minutes (my best time so far is 10:34)

One of these days I'd love to get back in the kind of shape I was when I was swimming competitively but I know that's probably not feasible, given how much I had to train to do that. But back then I could max the beep test right up to stage 14, bench and do tricep pull-downs at 20lbs over my body weight, do one-handed pushups and ugggghhhh I would love to be able to do that again. Ugh.

1. To get back into some semblance of shape, because damn I am unfit.

2. Tone my upper arms a bit, which is not easy(ideally I'd like to build up some muscle in them but that would require a lot of effort and I don't think I'd be able to manage it).

But mostly I just want to get back into shape.

"Toning" basically just means building muscle and cutting fat though.

Ahaa, okay for some reason I thought it meant something different. Doh.

Nice humbrag.

?

What am I bragging about? Right now I'm so overweight and lose my breath so fast that a half an hour on the elliptical is hard on me, what am I bragging about there?

If you can do an hour at any level - or even make that 30 min, which is the recommended daily activity, it's a humbrag. And I mean, good for you at what you can do and your determination to do more, but just because you're not where you want to be, doesnt mean what you have presented sounds like the activity level of a landwhale.

Seriously? Even when I have to stop every 8~10 minutes because I'm so out of shape I can't breathe?

You know something, anon? Only ever talking about how much you suck is as obnoxious as bragging (especially when "bragging" is defined as "you have revealed that you aren't completely 100% awful at this").

Maybe instead of getting upset about posts like ayrt, you should take a moment and think about what's so wrong with your life that you don't want to see so much as a hint that someone else has accomplished something.

It would be cool if I could swim one lap in a pool using my legs.

Also if I could upgrade lifting my 3 pound hand weights to 5 pound hand weights.

Also cool if I could someday sit up in chairs again without pain.

Good luck making your goals, anon! ♥

Re: Workout goals

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
The only goals I have right now is 1) don't get any more out of shape and 2) increase personal endurance. I find if I give myself too big or specific goals they fall to the wayside as I get busier. Simple is better. Once I'm content with my stamina, then I'll figure out the next step depending on schedule and finance. Whether it's classes or gym or sport.

Short term: 4 miles, 4x week.
I do 3x3 already but it's always rough. Haven't yet got into that place where running is easy.

Long term: Be active enough and with a low enough body fat percentage that I stop menstruating. No way in hell am I admitting this unanon, either.

Maintain a routine for longer than three weeks at a time (with about two years break in the middle) OTZ
