Hair and scars -- help me fix my face?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So when I was in high school, I became self-conscious about my moustache and started plucking it. I knew you weren't supposed to do it that way, but waxing didn't work unless the hair was a certain length and my hair was so dark and wiry I couldn't wait. So I just kept plucking away. Now the skin on my upper lip is really coarse and bumpy from being gnawed at by tweezers, and I have what looks like a permanent five-o-clock shadow. But that's not the worst part. Yesterday I accidentally pulled off a patch of skin and probably gave myself a permanent scar -- a big dark spot where the skin was torn. I know, it's gross and I'm stupid.

So a couple of questions:

Is there anything I can do to help the scar not be permanent, or to help fade it if it is? Scar cream treatments that work? Right now I'm just putting a bandaid on the raw spot and some anti-bacterial cream, and trying not to touch it. Any other suggestions?

Also, I'd like to somehow let my stache grow out so that the skin there can heal -- is there anything that won't remove the hair, but will make it softer and thinner? I keep getting told that waxing does this, but it hasn't happened with my legs -- I've waxed them for years and the hair is as dense and dark as ever. Barring that, is there anything I can use to remove hair that won't fuck up my skin AND doesn't require growing out the hair to Bob Belcher lengths?

I can't afford lasers and if there's any chance the hair will grow back, I'm not sure it's worth it. I tried electrolysis for a year in high school and the hair always grew back in a week or two, so I'm not keen to try it again.

There are many products available in your local drug store for scar reduction. A silicone skin fillers will help with the current skin lesion, as they work by reducing healing time which in turn reduces scarring.

For older scars you can visit a dermatologist and look into laser treatments. It would also be a good opportunity to check out laser hair removal, which is a much more permanent solution for you. It's much cheaper than it used to be, and in your situation it really seems like an investment you need in order to avoid further skin damage.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything that truly softens/thins hair aside from perhaps a change in body chemistry. Hair is what it is, the thickness/coarseness is pre-programmed. Once it heals, you could try treating it with a dab of conditioner (when you're showering, work it in and leave it a minute or two before rinsing it out). Drugstores will probably carry OTC scar reduction creams, though you could try asking your doctor about prescription strength stuff.

Other than that... well, keep treating any raw/open wounds with antibacterial cream, which heals healing time. I have no personal experience with hair removal techniques other than shaving, so I'm sorry I can't be of more help. :(

Eh... cocoa butter while your skin heals?

Aside from seeing a dermatologist, I dunno.

I don't envy you. :(

I never plucked since I didn't want to bother since it hurts and I'm kind of a weakling. When I was younger I always bleached there. It was unpleasant (the stench! up your nose!) and I had to do it at least every week or two. And for the darker, coarse hairs, I cut them off individually with nail clippers. (Lame, but it worked. I also did that under my eyebrows)

Now I just use a regular razor on my face every week. (disposable) So annoying.

I have a mo problem too anon but mine happened when I got to a certain age. I still pluck mine occasionally but mostly I wax it at home now.

Nothing will really make the hair grow softer and thinner but waxing makes the regrowth slower so it seems that way.

Also try rubbing in some scar oils like Bio-Oil once it's healed (or its equivalent for where you live).

If you have excessive facial hair you may want to consider seeing your doctor as maybe you can get a hormone treatment.

I'm not too sure about the scarring. Perhaps Bio-Oil? People have recommended it to me before.

I tweeze the hairs on my upper lip too when my epi-stick is hurting me too much (which is usually when I haven't used it as often as I should, so I'll recommend the epi-stick to you:
http://www.amazon.com/Fashion-Epicare-Epilator-Epistick-Threading/dp/B00A441UGA

Here is a girl reviewing it. I watched her video before I bought one and it was very informative:

But in short an epi-stick pulls hair off your skin such as when you are removing hair off like the threading method. To me, the pain from the epi-stick hurts a lot more since it's pulling a lot of hair all at once whereas with a pair of tweezers, plucking one by one hurts but is a bit more bearable.

The epi-stick works, but is painful. I have heard that if you use it every day or every other day the pain lessens with time. I get lazy and sometimes go weeks without using it and when I do, it hurts really bad I can only get halfway through it before reaching for my tweezers.

One of my coworkers told me she uses an epilator for bikini areas for her upper lips and says it works wonderfully so I'm thinking of giving that a try.

Seconding vitamin E: it healed a big scabby sore on my face completely when usually my picked pimple marks stick around for months, if not years. And it could maybe even help soften your upper lip too. Just make sure you get the pure oil whatever form you get it in, not vitamin E 'creams', because the creams usually have very small amounts proportionately of vitamin E.

I don't have any ideas for your current problems, but once your skin heals up a little, maybe just try shaving the mustache? I do that all the time, and contrary to what every single women's beauty product manufacturer has been telling society for generations, it works just fine for women and men. Our hair - especially hour facial hair - doesn't grow nearly as fast as men's, so "five o'clock shadow" isn't exactly a problem. Get the right razor and it won't irritate your skin if that's a major concern, and if shadow does form, it's pretty easy to just cover up with make-up.

ETA: one idea, aloe vera for the scar. Particularly, if/when you wear make-up, rub some aloe vera on the scar, wait until it dries, then put on your make-up. :)
