A question about smut

(Anonymous) 2014-07-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
So, there's a tendency in fandom for people to write or draw smut involving lots of kinky stuff. Because, you know, it's hot. And people have kinks and want to indulge in them, and that's cool. But despite the fact that I like a lot of really kinky stuff, I just can't get into any of it unless it comes across as being in character, even if it involves a kink that I'm otherwise really into. I find this very funny, because it's like...dude, it's porn. Who cares if it's OOC? Well, I care, apparently.

So, gentle readers, my question for you is: are you like me? Does your fandom smut have to be in character for you to get enjoyment out of it? Or does it not matter for you?

Yes, my smut needs to be in character for me to enjoy it. I'm in a lot of anime fandoms, old ones at that, so the weepy uke/rapist, abusive seme is quite prevalent in fic.I can't enioy that. It is just skeevy and so out of character for the characters in my ships. Finding in character smut is so difficult but oh so worth it.

Depends on what I'm reading the fic for. If I'm reading something with the aim of getting off, then anything goes. If I'm reading the fic more for the plot, then the kink has to make sense for the character. *shrugs*

Well, I won't say I'll NEVER read smut that's even remotely OOC, but if it feels off for the characters then I can't enjoy it in the same way. If it's horribly OOC then I probably won't bother.

Yes, I'm the same way. Fic that isn't in-character isn't that enjoyable to me, even if it's smut... and part of what I get out of smut is seeing the particular characters involved and their emotions and whatnot, so if they're out-of-character I'm not really getting that.

Yes. Otherwise, what's the point? I can find generic erotica anywhere.

I can and have read smut that's somewhat OOC but most of the time, yeah, it needs to feel IC or I'll drop it.

Yup, has to be (mostly)in character. Otherwise I spend the whole time going "What????" Which is not conducive to enjoying porn. Or any other type of fanfic, for that matter.

I'm like you. Perhaps, I am you. Or maybe we are ALL you...

Okay in all seriousness, I think exactly the same. Smut is hot and all, but it's kinda meh when the characters are so OOC, you might as well be reading about completely original characters. Like, what's the point of reading FIC if I could be reading about actual OC smut.

I'm kind of the same way. Even in regular slash, if a character comes across as SUPER SUPER DOM or REALLY CRAZY SUBMISSIVE when I don't think they're like that (and it isn't written convincingly enough to make me believe they're just hiding it) then it kind of throws me off.

I sort of like fic where the character in question is iffy about trying said kink (which is probably realistic) but ends up liking it, because I figure that's a thing that can happen. But if it's just a total clash then it's hard for me to get into it, yeah.

It depends on the fandom. Mostly, yes -- if it's OOC, I don't want and don't care. For a very select few canons, no.

In general, I'm the same, because if I didn't want everyone to be in character, then I wouldn't be reading fanfiction.

I have occasionally kept reading when a smutty fic turned out to be so incredibly OOC, it became hilarious, like when both characters have extreme and conveniently complementary kinks that just come out of nowhere and they're so matter-of-fact about it.
