well as someone mentioned the other day, sometimes people post regular opinions as secrets

The thing is people are diagnosing them as bad parents when they're just realistic parents.

Do you think parents who love their kids automatically get everything patenting-manual correct? Fuck, the manuals change every couple years even!

How the heck do you define a "good parent?"

(Anonymous) 2014-07-31 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
You got the fucking manual? Dammit, I knew that librarian was lying to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if I would call them bad parents (especially Katara since we've never really been given an indication that she's been anything less than loving and supportive of her children) but they were definitely very flawed ones

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Aang was kind of a dick as a kid. He had all those anger issues which were a huge red flag, especially at his age, and they weren't exactly sorted by him being flung into a series of violent battles, no matter what the series finale.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He was also twelve, lost his entire race of people, and had a massive responsibility weighing on his shoulders? He had reasons for being angry and they were pretty well-founded reasons. I think for a kid his age he handled situations well and rarely let his anger overtake him. It's kind of weird to label him as having anger issues when anyone else probably would have reacted the same or worse. I don't think anger had any bearing on how his relationship to Katara or his kids played out either, just unintentional favoritism.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what?

Um…sorry, don't agree at all. The one time I can think of where Aang REALLY seemed to lose it was right after they lost Appa which is understandable. Appa was literally the ONLY thing he had connecting him to his childhood and people he loved.

And considering the circumstances he was thrown into, I thought he was remarkably kind and level-headed for a twelve year old kid.

I hardly see how he was a dick.

I must say I agree
his ethics were super annoying (and so were Katara's), so it didn't surprise me one bit that they became the parents they became

Especially considering how natural their parenting mistakes are. Of course Aang is going to lavish the most attention on the child who most connects with the culture that he thought was gone forever, and of course Toph isn't going to know how much control is too little.

Stopped watching Korra at the end of the first season. Don't know what OP is talking about. Yay ignorance!

I don't think they were particularly horrible. They definitely made mistakes, but all parents do, and these were kids that spent their childhood fighting a war. There were always going to be issues.

I care...but not necessarily in a negative way. I find it, well, realistic. Basically they had so much other shit to do besides parenting that, no shit Sherlock, they would have a hard time balancing their family and public life.

I also find it hilarious parts of the internet were up in arms about Toph having two baby daddies (and apparently no husband) while I went "you go, girl" in my head.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god really? Toph never got married and had kids with two different men? That's frickin' awesome! Not that there's anything wrong with a more "traditional" household, but so few shows actually portray women who have happy families but don't settle down. Almost makes me want to check out Korra again.

I still jokingly believe that Toph created her children from the earth itself, and will do so until we get confirmation in the show that she did it the old fashioned way.

this. I think the realism is good. It also doesn't make them Terrible People, just humans who make mistakes.

no idea what they did "wrong", but fandom has ridiculous standards for parents anyhow. like every mistakes gets called abusive these days and fanon fills in sexual & physical & mental abuse, OOC homophobia, you name it

I guess it's because most fandom people are still closer to being a kid than a parent, so parent's POV is all about happy baby fluff and flawless dedication. it's always either idealization or horrible horror story.

Meh. I wouldn't mind if it made sense. Toph I can understand, Aang I can forgive. But Katara letting Aang neglect their children doesn't make sense at all.

Oh wow, did I miss something? So what if tenzin got more attention, or toph didn't know how to give her kids structure. They clearly cared and we're trying. I have my issues with my parents same as anyone, but me disagreeing with them or resenting some of their lifestyle choices doesn't mean they're bad parents? I never doubted that they cared or that they would be there for me. That's what matters.

it's weird how Aang looks so much older and Katara looks...taller and maybe a bit more chubby, but not actually older
