How do you know he'd disapprove?

Right? Maybe he'd be thrilled.

Hazarding a guess here, because while there is a lot of slash potential in the books, their friendship is amazing in and of itself. Maybe OP thought the author would dislike people reading it in that way?

IKR?

Regardless, I don't think it would have eaten at him. The salty dog.

Why, is it he a homophobe? (No snark, I just don't know the author.)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I only read the first book in the series, and that was a while ago, but as I recall there was a gay supporting character--a sailor in love with his captain--who was treated kindly by the other characters and by the narrative. Based on that, I very much doubt that O'Brian was a homophobe.

I remember the films and it's just so...slashable. But you know, the thing is that most author's know their stories live a life of their own once published. Chances are he wouldn't really bat an eyelash.

He would have been 93 (if my math is correct, which it probably isn't) when the movie came out, I don't expect he'd be up-to-date on what the kids were doing in the creepy parts of the internet.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-31 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well in '93, it wouldn't necessarily have been kids. The early internet days, the majority of people were college age and significantly older, thanks to the the cost of computers/equipment and the technology know-how required to get online. Pretty sure Usenet was chock full of porn of all flavors.

Hey, there are three great naval traditions. The slash fics are upholding one of them.

I don't know, I think we've got at least two -- sodomy and the lash are quite well managed. :)

If you liked the movie, you'll love the books: they are standalone novels but they are short enough to be easy reads.

Note that they are like separate chapters of one huge novel, so you'll want to read them in publication order.

Bonus: the Aubrey/Maturin series is so popular and respected that these books are widely available from all public library systems. They are also available as audiobooks!

He probably wrote them deliberately slashy. He just couldn't make it canon because of the time it was published in.

While the books show wonderful relationships, it's possible that PoB wasn't all that awesome a person - there's the question of when and why he left his first wife, and whether their disabled child had died at that point or was still alive. He was certainly secretive, which perhaps points to a less than happy interpretation.

Dude was incapable of going a single book without mentioning sodomy, I doubt he's rolling in his grave over fandom's rather creative interpretation of Jack and Stephen always being in each other's pockets. The reason I don't personally ship them is because if they were doing it, I feel like POB would've taken inordinate delight in telling us, and would probably have concocted a rollicking great tale of how they were found with their pants down on a deserted island by a French privateer. (I do like the shippy fic. But my personal headcanon always gravitates back to Platonic Life Partners.)
