If you don't have a college education, aren't currently in college, or have no desire to go to college, then forget it. Given the current economy right now, you practically need a bachelors degree just to get a decent job. (Sure there are exceptions, but they're rarities.) Besides that, most people I've encountered who don't plan to go to college tend to have zero ambitions and that is just an instant boner killer to me.

Huh. Oddly enough in my country a degree is a handicap. You earn more money going straight into work.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-31 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
In my country it's the opposite. You practically need one to guarantee you won't have a minimum wage job for the rest of your life.

In my you need one just to get the minimum wage.

Where do you live that a bachelors on average over a lifetime isn't going to make you more than just highschool.

Here you go: http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_chart_001.htm

On average, high school just isn't enough anymore.

Exactly? Unless you're a different anon.

You asked where I live where on average people with only a high school degree make less, you got the answer.

Moron read your own post.

Looks like someone cannot read the upper left corner on the webpage provided in the link that shows it's from the U.S. Department of Labor. Which would clearly indicated I'm from the U.S.

Reading is hard!

It's funny, because my bf didn't graduate and found a job in IT and I have two degrees and I don't have a job. It's funny how life can turn out.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Weird. But congrats to your bf. I'm just going by the statistics and my own personal experience with people who don't want to go to college.

Honestly, people in an in-demand trade make more money than your average college graduate where I live...

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Must be lucky for those who do, but on average that isn't the case.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's the same where I grew up. The guys that work in the oil and gas fields make way more money than your average shlub with a degree.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
But you generally still need to attend a trade school or get certifications for jobs like that, though. You need SOME kind of specialized training.

A lot of it's on the job.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. Not everybody is suited for college, and if you're not then you really shouldn't go because you'll have all the debt and nothing to show for it. I have people in my family who didn't go to college and work, even own their own businesses, and are extremely well-read. But, eh, you can't help what you're attracted to I guess.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's a personal taste, and I never doubted it was shallow. From my experience people who only have a high school diploma spend most of their free time drinking, have no ambitions, don't really exceed in the work force, and/or participate in illegal activity. This of course doesn't ring true for everyone, but I've met too many sad excuses where it's an instant boner killer.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I know. I read your original post.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't ring true for most people, and you probably have some pretty heavy confirmation bias going there.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well you sound pleasant.

I'm a college drop-out, but I have a job that pays over $20 an hour. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Re: Shallow dealbreakers.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Someone sounds bitter. People are allowed to have shallow standards about these things. If OP doesn't want to date people who are college drop-outs or have never attended college, they are not obligated to.

it's not just about OP's dating standards, but their overall attitude.

this comment is rather aggravating.

We already have a problem with people being pressured to go to college even if it's not something they want or can pay for and dismissing and demeaning manual work and other work that doesn't require a degree. College does NOT prepare people well for some fields. You're contributing to that problem and shaming people for having a different path in life than the venerated ~~college~~ that isn't even useful to everyone.

I don't care who you date, but your generalizations about people and education here are kind of upsetting.

If you care about people being ambitious, I guess that's fine (though isn't that a personality thing, so wouldn't really qualify for the thread?)
