Reincarnation

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone believe in it? Cautiously contemplate it? Think they know who they were?

*Shrugs* Don't think we've ever had anything like this, so.

Re: Reincarnation

I wish it were real, but like all afterlife/living on past you die theories I can't believe it. It just comes off as wish fulfillment to me, and there's wayyyyy too many takes on the afterlife for me to believe any of them are real. I honestly do wish there was an afterlife, though.

Re: Reincarnation

It's a cool idea, but there's nothing about it that seems plausible to me, so I don't believe in it.

I read "Lady Of Hay" when I was quite young, and I think that influenced me a lot -- so yes, I'd like to believe it. Being very interested in history I find the notion fascinating, but I understand why some people feel the opposite.

What I believe could be considered reincarnation but it's more of a recycled-jumbled-pieces deal than a one-soul-multiple-bodies situation. It's a lot like conservation of matter with souls involved.

I believe in the Lifestream, a la Final Fantasy VII. :P Which is basically that. That sounds really nerdy, but the idea that our spirits are like any other part of our body, and when we die they might "decompose" but in turn our elements may separate and combine to become something new. To me, the concept of "energy cannot be created nor destroyed" is the most spiritual phrase in existence. I guess it's kind of like "reincarnation" but I think it's something more than that.

Re: Reincarnation

I've begun to actually wonder if the PL memories people pick up on are memories they absorb from other people who were in a given place. When we die, we become the earth, so perhaps we remain within other elements - and our memories, our emotions, carry on. So a knight in medieval France might be killed for treason in a castle, and a visitor to that castle suddenly has a flashback of being that knight - except they're not.

Not sure how that explains people who remember the ancient times, except that over time, who knows how much has been carried over without us really thinking about it? An unmarked burial ground becomes a plant, which becomes food, which is served to various people...

I hope this makes some sort of sense.

Actually, those would be "memories" people absorb from the hypnotherapists, who ask leading questions, when the victims are in a highly suggestible state.

I... sorta believe there may be something to it? I'm a Christian, and so I believe the soul is eternal - and what's to say they don't get sent back for another round? Biblically, it appears to have happened at least once, if John the Baptist was Elijah. (I'm pretty open to any and all possibilities when it comes to theology, even if it isn't a traditional POV for those of my professed religion.)

I've had three different people who do believe in reincarnation, none of whom know each other, all tell me at different points in my life that they're sure I was either a high priestess in a past life or possibly one of the fey. I find that rather intriguing, but since I'm not really sure I believe my soul has been around more than once, it's not like *I* believe that I was totally a fairy in a past life or something.

I go back and forth. Sometimes I think I was a naive activist who died horribly in the 1980s, possibly killing a friend along with her. OTOH, that sounds like the plot of... many, many movies, TV show episodes and books, so. I also think I may have been a bit of a Church lady, which may or may not go against the first notion. My parents weren't remotely religious or prim and proper, yet as a little kid I thought it was wrong to swear on Sundays, didn't believe in sex before marriage, and all this other stuff I was never taught. It was weird.

It's sort of my wishful thinking.

But in reality, I don't think there's anything beyond death.

I've always thought that it's a really cool concept (something that going to Sunday School made me feel really guilty about as a kid), but I've never believed in it being real.

Though I did once read a short story that I found particularly interesting. Basically, in the story, reincarnation was 1) not limited linearly (so, you're not going to necessarily be born in a time period after you died) and 2) that it was only one soul, being reincarnated over and over, that formed the population of the world. So, basically s/he's literally every single person that has every lived. But I can't remember where it was I read it, unfortunately.

I believe in reincarnation because I believe in a very rough version of the concept of souls and I have a hard time believing they just go "poof and away" after death. But I never talk to anyone about this (I have no interest discussing it because it's either "believe or not believe" and I don't really care if other people believe in it or not).

I believe it's possible and it's definitely interesting and maybe a bit comforting to think about.

I believe in reincarnation. I'm not so sure I like the idea of living forever through different people, but it seems like the most plausible afterlife to me, besides maybe just plain nothingness. I remember when I was young, an older girl confided in me that she believed in reincarnation because it followed the law of conservation of matter- our "souls" couldn't just disappear.

Personally, I believe in it because it explains weird little quirks of mine. For example, for the longest time growing up, ever since I could remember, I wouldn't let anyone touch my throat. I'd have kneejerk reactions that I couldn't control when my mom would try to put sunscreen on my neck. I could only sleep in a position where my arms covered it. I felt too vulnerable otherwise. It was a weird paranoia with no basis in my reality at the time. It's gotten better with age, so I like to think it's memories of something from a past life that are fading the longer I live this one.

I don't believe in it and I think it's a bit of a silly concept. At first glance I like the idea of souls getting reborn, but only in a vacuum, not tied to any religion. The idea that people should suffer and atone for stuff they have done in a previous life just seems really shitty to me.

I don't, but then again I'm not sure what exactly I believe regarding religion. I'm not even sure I like the idea, but I do see why it might be comforting to others.

I believe in it.

I like to think that as a soul travels through each life, it learns more and more until it reaches that ultimate state. Some call it Enlightenment. Some call it Nirvana. Some people call it Heaven. Whatever you call it, I like the thought.

Of course, I also like the "punishment" system that goes with it. Rather than burning/freezing forever, you're forced to start again much lower in the reincarnation evolution chain.

Re: Reincarnation

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-08-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a cool idea but when I think about it too much I can't wrap my head around it into making sense. Like if we're constantly being reborn after we die then why am I remembering this life in particular? Surely I shouldn't because I'll just forget it all when I'm reborn?

But honestly there isn't any theory on what happens to us when we die that gives me any comfort at all, or I find plausible. So I'm probably the wrong person to talk to about it.

Re: Reincarnation

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. It's a neat idea, but I don't believe it. All the "famous" cases of supposed reincarnation are absolute bunk.

Re: Reincarnation

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm open to it. Getting a chance to make right some of the wrongs I may do this time around is not a bad thing. and it's not as unbelievable as being a shit your whole life, repenting on your death bed and getting to go to some perfect heaven for eternity.

Re: Reincarnation

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to. I'm still sort of figuring out what I believe, but at the moment, here's what I tentatively think. We're all made of matter, right? And I sort of believe that souls are made of energy of some kind. When we die, I believe that matter and energy goes back into the universe--we're made of cells, atoms, DNA, etc, so when that breaks down, it rejoins the earth/the air/whatever. And eventually I believe that that energy comes back together to create another person. A new person. Or maybe not a human, maybe an animal. Maybe not on earth, maybe not even in this universe, I don't know. But something like that. Spiritual recycling!

(Like I said, I'm still figuring it out so it doesn't necessarily make sense)

Oh, yeah, I love the idea of it, it fits with my belief that nothing in the universe begins or ends, it just changes shape and purpose.
