Is it limited to just slash? What about femslash? Where does that come into the picture when judging?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of judge people who write fic where all the major male characters are paired with each other, while any female characters are either single or paired with guys.

Ugh. This. If you're going to have only slash pairings in your fic, why not give the readers some femslash on the side? God knows that most of my fandoms could use some more of that.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people write what's interesting to them, and don't want to cram in some fanservicey femslash that they don't care about.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So it's wrong to dislike slash, but femslash is perfectly ok to dislike?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's wrong to dislike either of them, actually.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
My, what a mature response.

Well, your comment was a bit bait-y.

I agree. Fans who prefer eather slash or femslash shouldn't write anything that's not fun for them.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
DA

But fans who prefer het totes need to write slash when it's not fun for them...FOR GREAT JUSTICE!

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-08-14 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
only if it's my pairing! Joking. I'm just not annoyed by this. *shrugs*

I love femslash with my slash. And vice versa. But I know some people tend to keep background pairings canon, which is mostly het in most fandoms, and I've heard others in the past whine about the "everybody's gay" trope, which may be stopping some authors from doing it...but yeah. I'm with you.

[personal profile] ziltoidianrapture 2014-08-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't mind it if the background pairings are canon, but if the fic does fall under the "everybody's gay" umberella, it kind of bothers me when the ladies are either completely ignored or shipped with a male character that they've hardly interacted with in canon. Which is usually the case if the female character is a canon love interest. It's like... come on. Everyone's gay already, don't ignore the lesbians!

Oh definitely. If everybody is already gay, there best be some lesbian loving or else I'm just annoyed as all get out.

Like pair the spares? Ew. I'd rather go without that barely-mentioned lip service and just read something actually centered on what I want to read.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Pair the spares is the worst. I can't get away from it no matter what fandom I read fic for. Can I just have fic that solely focuses on my otps without shoehorning in other pairings I don't give a shit about?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, actually, but the thing is that what's going on is ALREADY pair the spares. There is a lot of slash fic out there that is going to bring up a lot of secondary slash pairings as well, and either

a) mention how just about every male character is dating some other male character, but not specify about the girls, or

b) mention how just about every male charater is dating some other male character, while the girls are dating some minor male character/OC

Yes. This.

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2014-08-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
You're reading id-fic, which is basically most fic really, and it bothers you that the author didn't mention something that doesn't fit into that? I roll my eyes and keep reading if the fic is fun enough, or read a better one. If I felt like being 12 years old, I'd find one of those fics where you vote for a pairing via reviews so the author gives my fave a bland cameo. At which point the author is half-assedly catering, and that's just boring.
ziltoidianrapture: (loki)

[personal profile] ziltoidianrapture 2014-08-14 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, probably should've mentioned that I'm not a fan of that either. I get usually really distracted when a fic has too many pairings running around, but I kind of don't mind it with femme, since some of the fandoms that I read fic for are really lacking in the femslash department. So there are times when I just go "Ugh. Fine. I don't care if it's barely there, at least I managed to find some femmeslash buried underneath all this het and slash."

If I don't see the chemistry, or the potential behind it, I'm just not interested or invested in side pairings. Or obligatorily slash, because that's what it sounds like you're describing. I see that in a lot of dude-centric fandoms with limited lady characters (who barely interact), and I guess I'm not desperate for f/f in those. m/m has it's own version, any two white dicks will auto collide in fanfic lol, and it's also just as boring to me.

I just want to say that I've read just about all of your comments in this thread and heartily agree with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because fic where everyone's paired in non-canon pairings is literally the worst? I can see arguments for any individual pairing, but all fanon pairings in the entire fic reads like cheap wish fulfillment. This applies to het, slash, and femslash.

Haha, as an original fiction writer, there's only one het couple in our (myself and my friend bounce a lot of new characters off each other so we consider them all 'ours' rather than hers vs mine) collection and she's in the family with two male parents, three gay brothers, and a gay sister. XD Poor Abbie is the lone heterosexual.
