I'm honestly wondering which fandom it is that's made of mostly of middle-aged men.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
it could be military thrillers?

I guess! I'm just really curious now.

So am I.

Could be the military stuff. Could be certain comics. Could be certain tabletop games. Could be certain strains of hard SF.

There are so many possibilities!

Could be, though I've known ll of those to have female fans, too. An,d at least also younger male fans.

Oh, definitely. I don't think there are any fandoms that are completely comprised of a single group. But there are some where you're more likely to come across certain types of people.

Virtually all sports fandoms.

That's... not really true

Aside from the tiny corners of slash? Yeah it is.

Which region and what sports, though? Everybody in my country regardless of gender watch the national sports like football and badminton. And most tennis fans I met over the internet are women, and not just in the slash part of the fan base.

Internationally, for football the fanbase tends to be a mix depending on the league/club. Still predominantly male, but not overwhelmingly middle-aged. Lots of people younger than me in some forums.

With respect to pro sports in North America, the majority of football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and racing fans are all middle-aged (or over) and male. The only things that aren't are soccer - though the bulk of soccer fans are still over 35 - and UFC because they're trendy right now. They're still male dominated as hell though, especially UFC.

In America maybe, in Norway most sport is pretty gender and age equal, football might have more (serious) male fans than female ones, but the other major ones everyone watches and loves sports does not matter which age or gender you are...

The fandom part on the other hand, is harder to talk define, most of them probably don't talk on the internet about their sports teams, but rather with friends, co workers, strangers on the bus, innocent bystanders and family...

Perhaps - though wouldn't those still have younger men, too? Unless it's like darts or something.

Most football (American) and baseball fans I know are 40-50-year-old men, too.

Same. Maybe OP is a gamer? Though there are plenty of popular games with big female fanbases, so...idk. Maybe ariakas is right and it's sports.

I've just never been in fandoms that were specifically dominated by older males (not even games ones). I had a few that were male-dominated, but most these were 20-and 30-somethings.

Sports would make sense, but even there you'd still have younger guys, too.

Some older games, maybe? I'm in a few video game fandoms from the early 90s that mostly consist of people who were in college at the time the games came out and have been in the fandom ever since.

Early '90's games would often still have plenty of 30-somethings.

Oooh, now I'm actually thinking it might be old arcade games fans #speculation.

Huh, that could be correct! ...Or not, what do I know. I wish OP would've been a bit more specific, but I guess it isn't important.

A sport? Or a particular music genre, maybe?
