Wait, do you want a modern AU or do you want a story set in universe that deals with all of those questions? Those are kind of different things.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-15 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think OP is saying there ARE too many modern AUs, not that they personally want them.

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-08-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, well that makes sense.

I am confused by this secret too. Apparently I can not F!S today.

I feel you. Hunger Games is one of those few fandoms where I just can't stand AUs (or at least AUs that don't have the same basic setting as the series). The Hunger Games and the oppression of the Capitol have such a huge impact on how the characters develop that I just can't imagine them in a setting where that doesn't happen. They would be totally different people. With some books/films/whatever I can imagine the characters being more or less the same regardless of setting but Hunger Games isn't one of them. And a modern day setting is just so damn boring when compared to canon. I honestly don't see the appeal.

Well, a Communist Russia AU might be interesting...

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The Hunger Games is an AU of modern times? There's no proof against that, come to think of it, but I always assumed and thought it was common knowledge that it was set in the future?

I feel this way about the Supernatural fandom too. And so many times the AUs aren't even labelled. I'll get halfway through a chapter before realizing it isn't set in the canon universe. I don't care what other people like, but at least label them so those of us who don't like that sort of AU can avoid them.

This secret is odd, because I feel like what you're asking for isn't AU at all.

That said, those questions you've asked? They're hard to answer, and the answers would be hard to write. That's why most people don't tackle them.

I re-read and I think OP meant she wants fewer modern AUs - "why there aren't more non-"modern" etc. (Or something like that, I'm away from the secret now obviously.)

I'm not sure what you're getting at? The secret is worded kind of confusing.

Anyway, back in the day, when Mockingjay came out, I feel like there were a LOT of post-MJ fic, so maybe now those authors have felt like they have exhausted their thoughts on that kind of stuff?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"how did they avoid having kids, but had sex until Katniss was ready for kids?"

Pull out method? Non penetrative sex? Birth control that isn't mentioned in the book but likely exists? That one doesn't seem like much of a question tbh.

(But for the rest of the secret, as someone who is only interested in non-shipping character study fics for The Hunger Games, I feel you.)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they just made whatever method the capitol used more widespread. I'm sure the bastards had some fool-proof thingie cooked up. Or had no hangups about abortion.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-15 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Pull out method?

In case you didn't know, that won't actually prevent pregnancy, because pre-seminal fluid still contains live sperm.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-15 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's obviously not 100% effective, but perfect use is about a 4% failure rating. Condoms are 2%.

However, people are obviously really bad about perfect use.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's definitely not the best method, but when done correctly the success rate of the pull out method is actually pretty high. Most articles put the rate of pregnancy at around 4 out of 100 people per year who rely on it (again, if done correctly). 96% success rate isn't too bad.

Birth control that isn't mentioned in the book but likely exists?

One of the many, many things that annoyed me about the books was Katniss apparently not knowing that birth control is a thing when her mother is a damn herbalist. If she talked about available contraceptives/abortifacents being unreliable or risky I'd be totally cool with that, but she makes repeated reference to not getting married because she doesn't want kids as if she's not aware that there are intervening steps.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed that she thought that any dude she married would eventually want kids so she wasn't going to risk it

That, plus because her mother is a herbalist, she's probably well aware that the available birth control is unreliable.

But I think Katniss is the sort of person who would assume that if it can go wrong, it will go wrong, or at least that you have to plan for it to go wrong. Her fear of children isn't based on a rational calculation on how likely she is to get pregnant - it's so overwhelming that it prevents her from thinking about the positive aspects of sex at all.

For post rebellion situations, though, I feel that the 'how did they have sex without her getting pregnant' just isn't that interesting. The Capitol's level of medical technology is so advanced and they're such a hedonistic society, that I'd find it totally implausible that they didn't have ultra-reliable contraceptives. (That said, someone - I think Fernwithy - wrote quite a sweet fic along the lines of 'three times Katniss had the long term contraceptive shot, and one time she didn't', which was basically about how Katniss came to be in a place where she was happy to have a baby).

(Anonymous) 2014-08-15 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This, plus the fact that I don't think it was necessary for her to talk about birth control in the District being unreliable because it's something you could easily infer due to how shitty life in District 12 is. Their medicine and what-not is already vastly inferior to the Capitol's and I feel like the Capitol would out of their way to make sure Districts don't have anything in the way of birth control because that would allow them to more easily avoid having children that would participate in the Hunger Games.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a bit hard to understand, but OP is asking for more non-modern AUs, as in less modern AUs.

Not in the fandom but I get the frustration with the growing popularity of cutesy "normal life" AUs (or AUs in general). It's like it's a trend to not think about the source material as a full universe that can be explored, and just take the characters to play house instead.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-15 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I feel kind of bad that the OP's probably reading all these responses that have nothing to do with what (s)he said because everyone misread it. (Including me.) I think some things are better worded more concisely, or in General Comments where you can elaborate a bit easier.
