What is this?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like the movie/miniseries/whatever of Going Postal.

Thanks!

Do you in "in history" as in "ever"? Because if you meant to say "in the history", I don't understand you.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-08-16 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Might just be a case of English not being the OP's first language. In Swedish, for example, the word for "story" is "historia" -- so it's an understandable mistake to make.

Ah. Well, she probably displays the most badassery of any of the female characters in the book, but not on the Discworld or in all time.

The conceptual split between "history" and "story" seems to be mainly an English thing.

Ugh, Moist.

Still, Going Postal has THE best version of Vetinari.

I was gonna say "but I love the moist books" (haven't read Raising Steam yet), but now that you say it, that might just be due to all the other awesome characters featuring prominently in those books ... and the amount of Vetinari being glorious (both in the books and the mini-series).

Don't want to hate on Adora Belle, but Granny Weatherwax is the most kickass character on the Disc. She took on Death, and won. Or at least, impressed him so much that he let her win. Plus all of the other amazing stuff she does.

Granny FTW!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Granny Weatherwax is absolutely the most badass person on the disc.

I would rate Nanny Ogg and Magrat (from Lords and Ladies) over Adora Belle too.

I really loved the actress, so ia.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
oh wow, I didn't know this existed! I will have to check it out.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Shame on you! ;) It's IMO the best adaptation so far!

Me too. I loved the book and I loved Richard Coyle ever since Coupling.

. . . . this anon will disagree violently with the other anon: this adaptation is awful, and one of the most awful things about it is that Adorabelle, who among other things suddenly becomes full of smiles, a pretty red dress and kissing/normal-person flirting in public with Moist at the end of it. (And the story does pretty obnoxious things with her activism, too, which in the books is extremely grounded and real and then becomes this shrill pseudo-passion mostly meant to Get At Moist in the adaptation.)

I wanted to like her a lot but can't stand Pratchett's writing of women who are meant to be attractive (Adora, Angua, Susan, Saccharissa the journalist, the vampire who joined the Watch). Even if they're amazing badasses and I should love them it ruins it for me. He can't go a page without mentioning that, hey, she's hot. There are way worse male gazers in fantasy lit but it still sucks because you want Pterry to be better. If only he had as many men where their hotness is integral to their character.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see that, anon. It bugs me too. I really, really wanted to like Angua in particular.

Well, there's Greebo. And arguably Carrot. But I take your point about it being mentioned more with the women.

I'd argue about the attractiveness being integral to their characters in some cases. I mean, it's there, but it's really not the only or even first thing of note about, say, Susan. I don't even remember it being commented on much in her case, except to point out the more unearthly elements of her heritage? Though it's been a while, so I could be misremembering, but even still. Susan in particular isn't really remembered for her looks.

Angua, on the other hand ... Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
...I really don't remember that.

I actually feel it's much more balanced than other books. Reread the Watch books and count up how many times Angua is mentioned as being attractive versus how many times Carrot is mentioned as being attractive. I swear, not one book goes by without a comment on his glistening muscles. (Not to mention two of the books' climaxes involve Vimes running around buck ass naked.)

Going Postal secret ftw!

I loved everything about the movie better than the book.
