Do you like it when fictional friends fight?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
When two close friends (especially best friends) in a book/show/etc have a fight, do you like it and find it interesting (even if it's distressing to watch), or do you hate it and wish it had never happened? (Assuming that the fight was not really badly-written or OOC or anything).

I've always really liked it when best friends fight, because for me, I always really want to have the security of knowing that the two character's friendship is strong enough to survive a fight (I feel a little bit nervous about friends who never fight because I always think "if they ever do fight, I don't know how they'll react").

But I know a lot of other fans who can't stand seeing fictional friends fight and say that they only want to see them being affectionate and at ease with each other, or that fights make their friendship less appealing.

I love it most of the time (if, as you say, the fight wasn't dumb or OOC), but I really need to see them make up awesomely afterwards. Otherwise it makes me feel all nervous and sad.

Generally, I like it far more when I rewatch/re-read and therefore know for a fact what will happen later and that it'll be okay, than when I watch or read it for the first time.

It depends on how often they fight/if it's always the same thing/how it's handled in the narrative. I don't mind a good fight if it gets settled, or does something, but if it's just fighting for the ~drama~ then I get bored.

Pretty much this. If it's interesting or there's a decent reason for it and both characters learn from their experience then I'm totally okay with it. (Even like it!) If it seems contrived and OOC or simply because drama then no.

it depends on how it serves the plot

Not if it's for dumb reasons or simply failing to communicate. That's just annoying. If there's a good reason for them to fight, it's fine, though I don't get particularly excited about it.

Communication failures, be it in romantic couples or friendships, fucking annoy me to no end. I don't mind legitimate arguments or whatever, but misconceptions and so on? ugh.

I think if a writer is talented enough a communication failure could be a good plot point, but it would take a good writer and a good plot to make it work well.

I like it a lot when the fight exposes some kind of difference in the two characters' personalities or attitudes towards an important topic or something. I always find that fascinating.

I like it when it's productive and has understandable motivations and says something about the character's personalities and shows them resolving their differences and making up (Harry Potter, for example).

Even when this doesn't happen, and it's just baffling and contrived and badly explained, I still like it IF it happens in a piece of media that has/had a big active fandom, and the fans make sure to write reams of fic getting it to make sense and showing detailed analyses and depictions of their motivations and feelings and how they made up (Starsky & Hutch fandom, I will salute you and your brilliant can-do attitude forever.)

It depends... if we're supposed to see a friendship as healthy but they're fighting over stupid things and/or using damaging tactics, I have issues with that, but if they're fighting the way friends usually do if they should be friends, I'm fine with that. I had a friend who'd fight with me by getting really personal and ignoring my rebuttals, and I feel like in a movie, we'd still be friends, but IRL? Hell no, we're not still friends. I don't put up with that shit.

I love it - if they end up friends again in well-written ways (not pat speechifying about someone was wrong and someone is sorry.)

I don't like fighting exactly, but I do love it when normally close friends end up on opposite sides of what they believe to be right. Particularly, if each ones' version of "right" is consistent with previous characterization and not just one half acting OOC to drive the plot.

depends soooo much on context. what is the fight about? how did it start? how did they conduct themselves? what's the normal dynamic of their relationship? etc.

+1 exactly this. There are some fights that make me horribly stressed out and angry to watch, and some which I just find really interesting/satisfying, even when both fights are well-written, because so much depends on little specifics about the situation/characters for me.

I think fights between friends or lovers can make a story interesting and show that the friendship/relationship is not overly perfect. A fight can even lead to a plot where the issues it raises are a long-standing issue that causes further problems that need to be resolved.

The big thing is that it takes a good writer to handle them well. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from writing fights, in fact I encourage it, because it never hurts for a writer to learn how to write these things.
