Your "stereotypes" about other fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Aka assumptions you make about people who are really into certain things. Like lit or gaming.

Destiel fans I automatically assume to be socially maladjusted, hyperactive teenagers.

I've sort of been assuming that show . . . whatever it's called, the one with Captain Hook and Rumpelstiltskin and somebody named Neal, is like Super Robot Wars for Disney fans. (Maybe more so than Super Robot Wars--people actually seem to like the plot in that series, whereas I only ever hear about the plot of that Disney show in terms of how horrible it is.) Anyway, it seems like the appeal is that watching it allows you to write fic of Disney characters from a bunch of different movies interacting, without tagging it as "crossover," because apparently avoiding a "crossover" tag is worth subjecting yourself to a show you constantly say is terrible.

Does it count if I have excellent fangirl radar? I can usually tell if someone's a fangirl or not, usually within the first ten minutes of meeting them.

That's really interesting, because I'm not a very conspicuous fangirl-- or so I tell myself!-- and tend to think that people wouldn't know unless I told them. I'm interested in a lot of things, of course, but not to the extent where it's like oh, here's my Firefly-related tumblr and my Sherlock Holmes tumblr and the t-shirt I got from Comicon last year with my signed autograph from William Shatner blah blah blah.

I'm really curious about this, because I don't talk about my interests when I first meet someone. I don't know if I'd ping you as a fangirl when I talk about literally nothing fannish.

Yeah, I'm a fangirl myself, so it's totally hypocritical to say this - but when I see women wearing fandom shirts and slightly "gothic" fashion while obviously not being in high school anymore, and don't otherwise present very well, idk, I get super judgey in my head. Especially if they start talking about yaoi or something in an obnoxious way, super second hand emabarassment (and I fucking love yaoi/slash myself). And I know that's terrible, hypocritical, etc.

I don't know if that counts as "excellent fangirl radar" - there's definitely women out there who it doesn't take ESP to determine that they are a fangirl.

Re: Your "stereotypes" about other fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldlove you to try your radar out on me. I'm like the ultimate undercover fangirl. I met a friend of a friend once, and he chatted to me about nerdy stuff, and afterwards I overheard him ask my friend something about whether I would think he was too nerdy. She was like, "No, dude, she's been to fan conventions. She is nerdier than you l00."

And even my IRL friends don't know the true extent of my fannish life...

I kind of assume Game of Thrones fans are "casual" fantasy fans who haven't read much other fantasy and worship George R. R. Martin and think he can do no wrong. Like part of the fandom is wanking over the guy and his pseudo "feminist" quote or whatever.

Same here. It's elitist, really, and I'm aware of that, but I can't help thinking that GoT fans are ignorant about fantasy as a genre/have a poor taste in it.

That being said, I think it's important to remember that there are always people who enjoy things like GoT because they're an excellent source of mindless, relaxing entertainment.

*sigh* I really enjoyed the books. The TV show I hate like poison, for no reason I can pin down. I don't feel like the two are the same thing.

It's all moot now anyway. Between the TV show and the fandom, GoT is dead to me.

I like GoT, I do not worship George R.R Martin nor think that he is some kind of God to writing, I just like the book series and enjoy reading it(and watching the show).

I assume Bronies are creeps. Male anime fans can be pretty goddamn creepy too.

Re: Your "stereotypes" about other fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly find female Bronies just as creepy as male Bronies. And I even understand enjoying the show casually, but hardcore fangirling over it weirds me out, and every real life female fan I've met has been a breathing stereotype.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh, almost all my run in with bronies have been with adult female fans and they've all been super vocal about it. The one dude I found out about (he was a coworker) kept it on the down low and was decent enough.

I'm going to word this one REALLY carefully, but I feel like a lot of people in live action fandoms - movies, TV shows, plays - are more interested in the celebrity aspects than discussing why we love the storylines and the characters. I know this is a generalization and doesn't apply to everyone, but that's just how I feel. (I DO think part of it is that as fandom/the internet becomes more mainstream, more... mainstream kinds of fans join communities and forums.)

People who are fans of Superwholock (and I mean the people who actually use that label) are teenagers who have the hots for cardboard-cutout pretty white boys and that's their main reason for caring about that set of shows.

I know, it's a stereotype and it's awful haha. I've never really articulated it either, but it's kinda where my brain goes. doesn't help that two of those shows are utterly uninteresting to me and the third is only marginally interesting. it also doesn't help that I don't find any of the main men in that set of canons even a little bit attractive, except maybe Chris Eccleston in some ways

Re: Your "stereotypes" about other fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I had stereotypes, but all of these horrible comments above me have reminded me how important it is not to have shitty stereotypes about people, simply because they like a show that I do not like. I feel like I'm a better person for this thread. I will endeavor not to assume the worst in people for silly fandom reasons. peace out.

Most of the adult Harry Potter fans I know are batshit crazy. Some of them even think they actually have magic powers.
