Asian dramas

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm suddenly in the mood for an Asian drama. Any recs? I haven't seen one in years, but back when I was watching them I loved Zettai Kareshi, Hana Kimi, etc.

Liar Game is one of my favorite Japanese dramas. It's different from the stereotypical drama and is based around logic games to win. I find that I get bored with the typical ones, but I did like Sunao ni Narenakute. Hanayome to Papa was pretty funny and I love Yukan Club. Proposal Daisakusen was also a sweet love story.

Here are the wiki links.

If you're into Korean dramas, Coffee Prince is a super well known romantic-comedy thing (with added crossdressing).

I would totally agree with Coffee Prince. Also Secret Garden is one of my favorite Korean dramas.

haha, it's difficult for me to rec Secret Garden because from the moment the 'twist' happened I felt like the writers threw characterization out of the window in favor of laughing at the image of this supposedly high-powered CEO acting like an idiot :X
I haven't quite forgiven them for that... then again, I do know a lot of people who loved this show, so maybe anon will too :)

But he acted like an idiot from the start with his sparky track suits and insisting on showing everyone the label so they'd know they were expensive, LOL. But I understand. I didn't mind the gags so much from the twist because it didn't actually last very long, span too many episodes, iirc, and the resolution made me cry and then gave me warm fuzzy feelings, which sometimes just doesn't happen with the standard drama fare. Also Oska was amazing. I named my car after him, I loved him so much. So ridiculous.

the point is, HE acted like an idiot, but SHE didn't, only once she was in his body it was like she was infected with his stupidity, and no longer remotely capable or with the program.

I'm glad you enjoyed the series, though, and that it left you feeling happy :)

I really loved 49 Days. It's got an interesting supernatural bent and it's really touching...does end kind of sadly though and not a lot of laughs if that's what you're going for.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal is also great; fusion historical drama, so you've got all the great costumes, about a girl crossdressing so she can go to college. Fun characters, mix of drama and comedy, great acting all around.

Do you like Japanese ones the best, then? I really recommend Golden Bowl in that case, it's probably my all-time favorite! There's also Tiger & Dragon, and Beach Boys. But if you feel like checking out something in Korean -- and something a bit more recent -- I really enjoyed Jugun-ui Taeyang (Master's Sun), Gaksital, and Padam Padam.

Where is everyone finding Japanese dramas to watch? Netflix has a ton of Korean ones, but none from Japan. Is torrenting the only option?

I went to Silentregrets site in the past, but it's gone offline to my endless disapoyment. There are some series on
http://forum.tvfreeload.org/
But not that many.

There's Drama Fever (they keep giving me free premium memberships that's cool), and Viki (that also has telenovelas and cartoons). The selection between the two is roughly the same, although DF is more likely to have full series where Viki might be missing a season, depending on the show of course.

Apparently Crunchyroll has dramas too, but I've never bothered to check that out.

Thanks for the info, especially that DF tends to have more full series. C: Good to know. And I had no idea Crunchyroll was doing live-action now, too. I might have to finally stop by!

Do you like romcoms, then? Hmm I dunno if I can help you much, most of the stuff I watch aren't romantic, but Nobuta wo Produce is a whole lot of fun, and I like most stuff Kimura Taluya does, usually they have some kind of romantic subplot in them.

If you wanna branch out to non-romantic ones there are lots: Legal High is wacky awesome, Kagi wo Kakatta Heya is entertaining, so is Doctor X. Hanzawa Naoki and Strawberry Nights are a lot more serious, but they're excellent (violence warning for Strawberry Nights though)

I loved Hotaru no Hikari, it's awesome.

Also the Ruroni Kenshin movie is not bad if you like the manga.

Seconding Coffee Prince since you dug Hana Kimi.

Also, Vampire Prosecutor. It probably doesn't jive with everything you listed, but it's a procedural about a vampire prosecutor in special cases squad investigating weirdo murders all while trying to figure out the big mystery of who turned him and fridged his mystery lady. So you got a vampire prosecutor, two detectives (one who knows he's a vampire and one rookie), and a science intern, and criiiiimes.

I really liked "Shinigami-kun" - it's a fairly short drama about a Shinigami whose job it is to go to people who are going to die soon and help them with things they need to do before death to find closure. It's a nice mix of cute, funny and sad. (I actually didn't expect to like it so much.)

If you like romantic school drama, I thought the Korean drama "Reply 1994"(or "Answer me 1994") was a nice one.

An interesting Korean high school drama without much romance, concentrating more on the problems the teachers and students face, is "School 2013".

If you're also into crime shows, "Mozu" is an interesting Japanese drama, but it's a little.. uh "grittier" than the average drama. A bit more on the lighter side (and more of a police procedural) is "Smoking Gun" - but I don't know if that's completely subbed yet.

A mix of mystery/crime and high school drama: "White Christmas". It's a little predictable and I didn't like the ending too much, but it's a fairly entertaining drama nontheless.
