I'm so glad I read this book and saw the show before I came across all the really intense Elphaba/Glinda shippers. I would have been so disappointed in it if I had been influenced by them to expect more from their relationship than I got.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. (Why does every BFFship have to be paired anyway? Though admittedly I can sort of see where they're coming from. "What is this feeling..."

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
lol "sort of" see.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I read the book after listening to the music about five thousand times and being aware that Elphaba/Glinda was a thing, and it was kind of a let down. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The book was a letdown in general for me tbh. I couldn't get through the whole thing.

It is. It really is. I mean, I prefer it as friendship, but I definitely see where shippers are coming from.

That...is a really good description of Wicked. It really is fanfic and crappy AU fanfic at that. Both the book and the musical.

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-08-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It kind of is, just without any pay-off in the end.

But it's THE roomate romance au

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I really really want a Wicked movie mainly because I really think Elphaba/Glinda could get the kind of fandom big m/m pairings get.

Ooh and then maybe I could get some fic where they're actually in a reltionship and it's not all subtext that I'm sick of hearing about!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not though? It's just the story of the witches before Dorothy appeared. If it helps, all the Glinda/Elphie is subtext.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the play once. Don't remember too much to ship.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-08-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen the play, but the subtext was mildly there in the book. I shipped Elphaba with that Firenze dude more though. (It's been a while since I read the book.)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Do yourself a favor and don't see the play. The book is so much better, which isn't saying much since it isn't that great of a book, either.

Eh. I liked the book enough to read it twice. But, then again, I was 15 and the book opened with a dude with two cocks fucking a mother and daughter. What I'm saying is it made me tingly.

I'd say the exact opposite, I love the play and only like the book.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-21 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
eh, difference strokes etc. I thought the book was ok and the musical was phenomenal.

Firenze is the centaur in Harry Potter...

I know. I can't remember the dude's name in Wicked. I kinda ship Harry/Firenze. I blame Brad Neely's Wizard People, Dear Reader. Just, you know, FYI.

Don't listen to them, the musical is much better than the book. The musical actually has, you know, a cohesive story instead of edgy scenes just to be edgy shoulder to shoulder with boring politics. The musical is more Oz-ian.

I agree with you 100%. I found the book unpleasant at best, and borderline offensive at worst, in part due to its apparent determination to distance itself as much as possible from the "Wizard of Oz" family-friendliness.

If you want to see recorded versions of the musical, someone can probably hook you up OP. My favorite song is probably Nessa's and that happens to be the only song that isn't on the soundtrack, so I'm a fan of the recordings.
