Do any of you actually like certain genres of fic better what it's bad than when it's good?

For example, I vastly prefer smut where it seems like the author doesn't realize how rapey or abusive her porn is to smut where the author seems to know exactly what she's doing.

I also generally like humorous slice-of-life fics better when the author is mediocre or at least somewhat immature. They're more likely to be forthright about being a day-in-the-life, instead of being pretentious or trying to be clever or trying to slip in some kind of dumb metaphor or hidden message.

I wouldn't say "bad," but, at least in the fandoms I'm in, I've often enjoyed long fics where the writing is unpolished or technically mediocre (though still readable) more than the longer stories that are written really well. This is because their authors seem to place less importance on following the canon to the letter or pleasing the widest section of their fanbase, and so the plots are often more inventive and the interpretations of certain characters are more interesting-- overall, it's just more unique and surprising and, essentially, more fun to read.

Of course, there are less skilled writers who try to play it safe above everything else and fantastic authors who write extremely unique stories as well, but I've seen the scenario described very frequently. I guess when authors are just beginning or are looking at fic as only a fun hobby, they're less likely to feel "restrained" by their potential audience or the world of the source material and can focus on creating something that kind of pushes the boundaries of the typical fic for that fandom.

If that makes any sense.

This makes perfect sense and I 100% agree. Most of my favorite longfics are not very technically proficient and this is exactly why. Especially when it comes to shippy fics. So many long shippy fics by really "good" authors are predictable yawn-fests, even if I can tell that the writing is technically very good.

Sorry to say that "So Bad It's Good" flies over my head. I usually end up getting fed up with shitty stuff, especially fic.

nayrt

It's not really a case of "So Bad It's Good" for me, more of case of "Skilled Authors' Fics Aren't As Enjoyable As Mediocre Ones."

For what it's worth, I have the exact same attitude towards movies and books. A lot of the ones that I think are the best-made and most brilliant and intelligent are not really very enjoyable, and I prefer ones that are slightly rough or clunky, they tends to feel much more joyful and earnest and unabashedly loving towards the characters and premise.

Not ALL really good movies/books are less enjoyable than not-so-good ones, of course, but enough to be a distinct pattern.

I can get that. I kind of agree about movies, though, because if a movie is too glossy, it's kind of a turn off.

As I'm fond of saying, nobody does better subtext than people who don't believe in subtext. When someone is just absolutely po-faced TEXT IS ALL AND NOTHING IS OUTSIDE IT A IS A AND ALL ELSE FOLLOWS FROM THAT ALLUSION SYMBOLISM PARALEIPSIS A JEDI CRAVES NOT THESE THINGS then you know that their writing is going to be a hilarious look into the most unexamined parts of their id.
