Is there any trope that you love so much you will read badfic to get it?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
?

I personally will read almost any gen hurt/comfort no matter how terrible the fic is. And though I have some standards for slash and het hurt/comfort (mostly because of some particularly creepy forms of Magical Healing Cock and other sexual squicks), but not very high ones.

Oh yes. De-aging fic. I have read some terrible fics because of that.

I have daydreamed many a de-aging story in my head.

Hmmm. Not really? I still have standards even with my preferred tropes.

I'm surprised to say that I am the same. I did not know this about myself.

Though, depending on my mood I will accept lesser quality fic. Like, right now none of the SG-1 fic I've read is really hitting any of my buttons (I think it just may be the ship-- I'm not really that into Jack/Daniel, which is what I've been reading, and I don't ship Jack with Sam AT ALL), but I've been out of it with this sinus thing for over a week so I'm pretty easy to entertain right now.

Question: have you tried non-shippy team!fic or rarer pairings?

I'm like that too. It's that there's just a quality line I can't cross, it seems.

And that's sad to hear about SG1. I like Sam/Jack but I never did care for the fic so after a few tries I gave up on reading romance fic in that fandom. (I tried other ships too.) Maybe you can ask for recs? Someone on F!S might have something you like.

Pretend dating

I don't even care, give me all of it, in all pairings and scenarios. I don't care how weak the justification or execution is.

Sometimes I enjoy reading these just to see how outlandish the justification is, tbh. Fake dating is a wonderful trope.

m-preg, hoping for mad science!!! and/or dark magic construction--too bad most of the time it's that stupid "oh it just happens" handwave and skip to cliché-ridden regular-preggo fic.

I would've once said soulmates AUs but I recently came across one I had to backspace out of because it was too bad even for me.

I find soulmates really interesting but only if it's not a justification for fluffy happy times with no arguments. I just end up thinking about all the insecurities it would probably bring up in me if I were to find out I had a soulmate and it intrigues me.

Agreed about still being themselves/able to argue/not just fluff. I only like them if they address that you don't *have* to get with your soulmate if you fall in love with someone else and you can still be happy, no one goes crazy, etc. Luckily that's most of the ones I come across.

Certain types of hurt/comfort. Rape, or Presumed Dead, or Kidnapped. Most other kinds of hurt/comfort I have standards for, though.

Also, grovel!fic or make-up!fic post-eps for certain canon episodes/events in certain fandoms. But there's only a very few canon episodes/events that totally destroy my standards. <_< (I'm wondering if anyone can guess which...)

I will read just about anything super melodramatic and sad and where the plot is predicated on ridiculous misunderstandings.

Re: Is there any trope that you love so much you will read badfic to get it?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I have a weird similar one: I will read just about anything super melodramatic and sad and where the plot is predicated on ridiculous misunderstandings as long as the misunderstandings are not romantic. I got completely maxed out on the fucking "angsty romantic misunderstandings" trope by the time I was about 14, before I even moved from mainstream media to fanfic, that's how oversaturated the trope is. I cannot take it seriously anymore so I can only stand it in comedies.

Any other kind of ridiculous misunderstanding, though? Bring 'em on!

Heeeeeeeee. I hear ya. It is totally overused and cliche and silly. I can't help myself. It's like a sickness.

World building. Especially detailed or unique world building, and especially (in modern-ish worlds) anything with a media or social media element. Also, D/s worlds (or well thought out, not-tropey-or-rapey ABO fic).

Which means if an author does elaborate D/s worldbuilding with a lot of media (social and otherwise), they could write like a fucking kindergartner and I will love their fics to hell and back. :P

...I suspect this (world building) is the only reason the shit I wrote 10 years ago still gets any views at all. Well that and I think one of them is probably on some kind of rec list based in the Philippines (this seems to be a popular topic on F!S this week).

Anyway, yeah, I may cringe at the prose but I had some weird thinky ideas about modifying the world of the source and developing new things that could exist in it-- including an AU origin for it-- and I guess that's why people still read it.
