Regrettable Fandom Moments

Anyone have any regrettable fandom moments? Post them here!

I'll post mine in a reply below.

One of mine is when a few years back, a forum member started sending nice messages using a sockpuppet account. Some of those members began to ask who it was, and many of us asked why we hadn't received anything like that yet. (A lot of us had displayed our emails, I think. Or it was sent through Private Messages as a sock.) So of course the Greeting Fairy (or whatever she was called) had to bustle around sending things to everyone, apologizing for people who hadn't received them. We still weren't happy and said she was starting a popularity contest, even though we'd really decided it was one. I later found out who it'd been - a sort-of BNF there who hadn't posted much since. She came back after the fact, but not much.

I still feel bad that I was one of the people acting so petty. Looking back she was obviously doing it with good intentions, and it got out of hand. I do think she should have seen that coming, but we also should have been way more mature than that. :( I especially wish it hadn't basically driven her away.

Only that I was pretty heavily involved in a couple shipping wars back when I was a teenager.

Same here. I was a shit in X-Files chatrooms when I was 12. I was REALLY rude to Scully/Skinner fans.

One of my friends wrote fics that tended to get nasty reviews, and I'd yell the shit out of people who did. In my defense, some reviews were less constructive criticism and more "you should never write again, you whore!", but still, not my proudest.

Maybe? I ditched a few places I frequent without giving a heads up or a way to contact me. I wasn't really close to anyone, but there were a few people I got along with well enough. Hope no one ever got worried about that.

But, idk, the anon life is pretty nice. Zero drama and no commitments.

Back when I was in the Geneforge fandom, I picked fights with folks who supported factions I disagreed with. (A rough comparison would be a Shin Megami Tensei fan who really likes the Chaos ending in a certain game, and picks fights with everyone who goes Neutral.) There were some interesting philosophical discussions that resulted, and I don't entirely regret them, but I could certainly have been less antagonistic.

There actually were quite a few debates between the Reincarnation/Neutral and True Demon Ending fans back when SMT:Nocturne came out, but I don't think they ever got nasty.

I wrote a couple reviews on my sister's fic with a sockpuppet to make her feel happy that someone was reading it. She and the sock got into a bit of an online friendship, and then I just randomly dropped it because it was too hard to maintain. The sock going away probably made her sadder than if the reviews had never been posted. :(

Aw. :/ Has it been long enough that you think you could tell her? Or is that a bad idea?

I was really into Mary Sue mockery. I followed all the popular journals on LJ and started one for my main fandom. I regret it all.

Even though I was a big OC defender, I got into it a bit for a time simply because I thought it would make me more popular. It didn't last long, I realized after two kind of mean reviews what I was doing, but...

I definitely read pottersues during its heyday. I never took my lulz at Sues back to the OP though, I was just a lurker.

I used to be really into the 2004 movie version of Phantom of the Opera and even wrote fic for it.

When I was 14 and took everything too seriously I wrote a very upset email to a Dragonlance fansite that featured a lot of spoofing and mockery of the characters I liked, because my tiny 14 year old taking-everything-too-seriously brain did not grasp that it wasn't meant seriously and also felt it appropriate to chastise people for daring to make fun of characters I liked. They replied with a very nice email gently pointing out that it was a humor site. It's been 12 years and I am still embarrassed whenever I remember this.

That I didn't try to talk to people when I was a newer fan. I could have had long time fandom friends!

But alas, I've just always been too shy.

I took sides in an argument pretty loudly, only to realize the first person was full of shit and twisting the story so we'd all feel sorry for her. I was never really forgiven for taking sides either, and I wish there'd been a way for me to explain myself without dragging up old wank. (The place in question is no longer active, so it's way too late.)

There was a fanart fest and I turned in a pointless fanart. It had just the heroes faces, very boring and hand drawn. Idk, I had to study, I was occupied with other things, I was young, etc, but the fact remains. Looking back I wish I haven't participated.

Several years ago, I met a woman online who was in the same fandom, and we met in the first/second season of the show. I'd found her blog for the show, she needed tech help...that's how it started. Emails, chats (with her and others), even phone calls. What I didn't find out until I was involved with her and was head minion for her little kingdom is that she was batshit insane and wanted to control EVERY aspect and corner of the fandom. Needless to say she wasn't very popular in other areas of the fandom.

Her blog came to the attn of the exec producer and the writers and eventually the actors.... To the point of being in contact by email and phone with the EP and writers. Live chats with the writers and eventually the actors took place for those active on the msg board we ran. These were known actors, stars of the show. I did most of the technical work setting them up. She had a couple visits to the set. She'd promised to take me, but that never happened. I did get a phone call from a fave writer from the show--it was him as I recognised his voice from interviews I'd seen with him.

I got disillusioned as she became even more determined to have control of the ENTIRE fandom, and then after I was critical of an ep by her two fave writers, I was in her email acct (never give your minions your email password) and read an email between her and those writers, as well as a subsequent email to one of her other minions about how they could force me out. It devestated me, reading that email.

I saved her the trouble of getting rid of me. I took the part of the site that was mine and got my own space. I prepped my post for the msg board, posted it--i didn't flounce (though I made a mistake in the code for the redirect of my site that changed her entire site to mine. I fixed it as soon as I realised, though I won't lie, I lmao over that-she thought it was intentional); tbh, can't remember exactly what I said...think I claimed health problems or some such. But that I was stepping away.

Looking back I am glad I read that email--i'd been having doubts about things like her need to control and restrict everything. I've always felt that fandom was about sharing, but for her it was about ego--hers and what special things she could get for herself. I mostly don't regret the experience, since I did get some special things out of (like one of my best friends).... Just wish I'd clued in a bit sooner.

Making friends in fandom with two people within two years who turned out to be toxic pieces of shit. Never again.

Re: Regrettable Fandom Moments

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
After a year-long tug-of-war with a drama-bombing narcissist who was, essentially, trying to take over a message board (owned by another person), I quit my modly duties and the site and migrated to a different fandom board, hoping I could once again play a role of even little significance.

My decision for going was stupid. The BNF who ran the board (and was part of another forum I also went to) posted a few times at the old board. Honestly, I was a bit intimidated by him but also had half a crush on him too. I posted under a new name, staying mostly on the sidelines like a scared idiot. When I finally "came out" so to speak, he was going through his own drama and went on hiatus so I felt I still couldn't talk to him. Eventually he started wanking about something (though justifiably) and I called him out on his attitude (partly) and poor plan of action (mostly) and I somehow ended up on his friends list for something. To this day I still have no idea why.

It was a long time ago, but I just kind of wish I'd been less of a wuss or even just viewed him as a normal person so I could have gotten the stupid stars out of my eyes sooner. I never really did get to know him. Maybe I just got too comfortable with the distance (it's like, wtf, really? It's the internet. Get a fucking grip).

I guess writing shitty fanfiction would count as one. Also burning all that Naruto yaoi into a CD, if only because looking back at it, it seems like such a waste of money.
