Yesterday's thread about richness in GC and the "oh I'm not rich, everyone who has more than me is rich" trend of responses to it got me thinking.

Is there anyone here who is willing to admit un-anon that they're just plain rich?

Beats me. From the general attitude of the thread yesterday, it seemed like nobody wanted to say they were.

NAYRT, but on the internet it's often assumed rich = being a Republican who hates poor people. Which CAN be the case, but there's many people with money who worked hard for it and know where they came from.

Define rich, are we talking possessions, amount of money you have, amount of money you make, etc.?

Do you think anyone here would say un-anon, "I consider myself rich"?

I don't have a dreamwidth of livejournal account but I think my family would definitely qualify as rich now. We weren't for most of my childhood though -- I slept on a mattress on the floor until I was about thirteen years old. And I basically never saw my dad until that age either because he was always working (so was my mom, to be fair, but she put in fewer hours).

I (personally) am not rich now. But I realize that having rich parents who will support you basically makes you rich by default.

It's not that I don't believe you, it's that it's different when anon. Nobody can attach this comment to a username, so there's no reluctance to say.

I mean, I could make an account. But given that I likely won't use it for anything and have no history attached to it, would it make a difference?

Just to note, that I'm not talking about private jets or anything. We're not fabulously wealthy beyond dreams. But I'm pretty sure we're in the 1%. We don't have maids or cleaning ladies or anything though.

My mom still cleans the house and pool herself (we have a pool, so there is that). I helped when I lived at home. But my parents do have a lot more saved up than the average couple their age from what I could discern. And we have more of certain types of things.

My family can afford to have a carer come in every day of the week, for four to eight hours each day, for my 93 year old grandmother, so that she and my impact any of the children or grandchildren's economic future. My parents were able to pay my way through college without taking out a student loan, and they still help me with generous presents. I'd call us rich.

I'm trying to explain what I mean, but apparently people are getting offended by being told that a question wasn't directed at them, when they responded anon?

I'm not trying to put down anons or rich people. I'm anon. But anons weren't the subject of this thread. Was that really not clear? What should I have said? I'm open to suggestion.

My parents insist we're not rich, but I think they're just really bad at saving money. They certainly have lots of cash to blow on frivolities.

I was curious whether anybody would be willing to actually say it or not. I've seen a few people say it anon but never logged in and those might have all been the same anon as far as I knew.

It seemed to me like there would be some stigma attached, because there are a lot of anons and named users here yesterday and in threads the past that seem to have a prejudice against people who are rich, or people who are rich might fear sounding like they were showing off or be uncomfortable admitting it.

Do you feel anything like that?

Nope, I have an account here that I use regularly, consider my family rich, and I am just plain not doing that. F!S and classism are not a mix that I will not involve myself in unanon.

I was also the anon who started that thread. I intentionally avoided asking about the poor benchmark because F!S discussions focusing on poorness get weird and wanky fast.

Figured it'd be sort of useful for you to get a definite negative rather than left wondering if there's anyone who could potentially fit the bill. Sorry. :x

I won't admit that I'm rich, but I'm well off and comfortable. Currently, I live almost like I'm rich because I'm still living at home with my parents, so I have considerable financial freedom.

My parents have also worked really hard for everything they've earned and always provided well for us. I never thought of myself as well off because I live in an affluent town, but when I moved South for a few years I realized just how well off we were. But it's through hard work.

Also I read yesterday's thread where someone considered having a vacation a status of being rich but around here, it's quite commonplace to have inherited a family vacation house. My extended family is the same way where everyone has a vacation house that they inherited, but they're all double wides.

So my question would you consider a double wide vacation home being rich?

Do you not want to say you're rich because you feel it's inaccurate, or because you aren't comfortable with that label? Or both? If someone gave you that label, would you feel like that's a negative label to have?
