... why is liking older British sitcoms problematic? I feel like I'm missing something.

I always loved Keeping Up Appearances. And Mr. Bean.

It's a troll secret.

Some of them are rather spectacularly racist and/or sexist in places (the Carry On series in particular). They're funny as hell, but yes, there are some problematic elements.

And yes! Keeping Up Appearances is still awesome. "The Bouquet residence, the lady of the house speaking!"

Because in the era of comedies the secret maker is talking about it was common to take the piss out of everyone, in the broadest possible terms, using language that these days gets people's knickers in a twist.

I think it's because they have so many "problematic" elements in them. I've recently discovered the "Carry On" films, and found I absolutely love them. But I also realize that many of the SJW type would see me as a horrible terrible person for laughing at, say, actors in "brownface" (like in "Up the Khyber" and "Up the Jungle").

I love how outrageous they are, and appreciate the jokes for what they are, and taking the time period into consideration.

Because for many of them, they were racist and sexist. I don't mean the tumblr version of "everything is racist" but actual "blackface" racist and "jiggle TV" sexist.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Uh...no? Not "problematic" at all to love old British comedies.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Phew, good to hear. I love the Benny Hill Show.

The word "problematic" just jumped the shark.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think it jumped the shark a looong time ago.

Privilege is... getting up there.

I strongly disagree with you on Carry On Screaming vs Young Frankenstein, but that it because Young Frank is perfect and I will hear no word against it and I won't even remotely pretend to be objective about that ;)

I like a lot of the older comedies too, but I grew up with a lot of them, so some of it is nostalgia value. They had their incredibly bad moments, oh yes, but they're still hilarious.

There are few things that annoy me more than the simpletons who refuse to understand that it's possible to enjoy a show which features less-than-great elements without actively condoning and promoting those elements oneself. I wish all those people would just go away.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I like this article (though I wish they didn't use 'social justice' in the URL because most people won't read it for that)

http://www.socialjusticeleague.net/2011/09/how-to-be-a-fan-of-problematic-things/

I like a lot of things that I know deep down are full of ~ist shit, but you're better served enjoying those things and helping others who don't understand see what's good/bad about them than standing alone and screaming at everyone who likes it that they're horrific human beings while self-flagellating because you like what you like.
