I thought I was the only one. I couldn't finish it it was so boring.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how anyone could think they're the only one at this point. There are way more people around here who hate the book than actually like it.

You should read Les Miserables

(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
?

Why? For the musical connection? Or just as general advice?

NO no no. Phantom of the Opera. How the HELL anyone managed to polish that shit into a beloved musical is so far beyond me, Hubble can't even photograph it.

Les Miz I can almost see in places. Not Phantom. Not for an instant.

I have a weird love for the glorious brick. I much prefer the musical, but the book isn't bad if you know what parts to skip over. I know you love Paris, Mr. Hugo, but I don't need to read 200 pages on its sewers.

As I recall, I liked the first half -- thought it had some fun, inventive bits -- but for me the narracive really fell apart by the end.

spoilers in comment

Yeah, by the time she was *SPOILERS* wandering around with the dying elephant/caravan I was just like...what? What is even going on here? And why is it going on?

Haven't read it, probably never will, but that cover is gorgeous. So pretty!

I've not read the book but good lord that cover is beautiful.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What gimmick is that? The "good side to evil character" thing?

I liked it, although now I have to wonder how much if it was the same reason I liked Rent so much - I was twenty and I loved the idea of someone snubbing *authority* and being *unique.* I still think Wicked's good concept, I still love the musical, and I still really like Rent, but I don't think any of them were the pure genius I thought they were when I was twenty and protesting The Man and all that.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-08-30 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I thought 'Wicked' was average overall: neither the greatest book I ever read, nor was it the worst. But it's not something I'm in any hurry to re-read either, since nothing in the book stood out to me as being memorable or worth revisiting. Given it's glorified professionally published fan fic, I'm both surprised and not surprised that it got as popular as it did.

Oh, good, someone else had this reaction to the novel. One of my librarian friends gave it to me to read because it was 'awesome!' The only thing I remember about it is her bathing with oil. Obviously, it made a tremendous impression on me, that I remember only the oil thing 20+ years later.

And I'm tired of all the secrets about this book. We get it. Many people thought it was trash. Many others thought it was good (myself included). Let's move the fuck on.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe this person really thinks he or she is the first to have such an opinion.

I'm tired of people being tired of hearing about things and complaining to OPs, personally.

There's been like, two secrets in the past month. Maybe three?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Why complain, though? OP wanted to make a secret. You could just scroll past it if you don't care.

I can't stand the book. I think it's pretentious, boring, and trite.

...But I love the musical. It's not a masterpiece, but it's massively entertaining.

I read the book before seeing the play too. The book was one of the most horribly written, self-indulgent piles of crap I'd ever read. The play is amazing though. I was expecting it to be horrible after the book but I was wrong. You can polish a turd after all.

I have no interest in this book, but dammit, that's a pretty cover.

Add another to the "glad it's not just me that thought that" pile.
