pretty sure that's true of everyone everywhere regardless of fandom or not

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. For a group of people allegedly as fascinated with sex as fandom is, there is an awful lot of 'boys have cooties make them stay out of my nice clean sandbox' mentality floating around. (And probably visa versa although personally I haven't noticed the boys being quite so militant about it whereas I've been flamed by female posters for questioning their less than welcoming atmosphere.)

>allegedly as fascinated with sex as fandom is

you say that like other internet groups aren't, or something

being interested in sex doesn't mean you know about the people you want to have sex with. proven over and over by erotica in fandom and out of fandom and male and female alike

you're clearly not hanging around a lot of spaces historically dominated by men - because wow have I often encountered the "girls have cooties make them stay out of our nice spaces where we do fandom *properly*" just as often.

I am pretty sure that is fact. Especially when it comes to how sex works for the opposite sex. But I see some stuff that women authors write about men, and I just facepalm.

self lubricating anus.
gay men have them.

Yeah, a bit. But it sot of depends. Obviously you have the phenomenon of a bunch of teen virgin girls writing slash, for example, which obviously as set some clichés about how dudes have sex which might not really be a reflection of how dudes actually have sex.

And then you have things like fandom spaces, like the one in tumblr, being occupied by SJW who basically demonize men in fandom.

But then, I do think there's also places where it's more balances, like on F!S.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I still want links to this mythic tumblr that in no way resembles the actual site and culture.

I see a LOT of SJW posts on my dash even though I basically follow all the blogs I do for fandom reasons. And still it seeps through.

Yeah I hear that. When I finally bit the bullet and got one f!s had led to believe it was some nightmarish hellhole of non-stop "die cis scum" but I honestly haven't run into anything like that. There's been a few mild "yay combat exclusion is over/yay gay marriage is legal in my state/rape is bad" posts, but if those statements are obnoxiously over the line to you on a "social justice" level, I don't want you on my planet.

Same here. Where is this mythic Tumblr that SJW's don't exist in?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if Case would let me put up links to them, but yes, there are some really obnoxious bullying teenagers living in a fantasy world.

Most of the internet places I frequent are female-dominated but I can't think of any so far that have really weird perceptions of men.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on, there is plenty of time and space in the non-fandom world to learn about the other side. Fandom peeps make friends, date and/or marry much like other folk do. Divided fandom spaces aren't stopping anyone from learning about Teh Oder Side. Sometimes, you just need that kind of space.

I think this is pretty true generally as well, but there's a lot of misinformation about both sexes out there and because their touted as 'truths' people don't tend to question them(or at least that's how it seems to me sometimes anyway).

Honestly, there are a lot of those truths that people don't even question about their own gender. So many people think they're the exception to the rules about their gender without considering that maybe there's more variation than they think.

True, but then again fandom also seems to have really bizarre ideas about the same gender. 90% of all the "all women do this" and "all women have to think about this" posts I see online, written BY women, just make me think, "huh, I've never thought or done that in my life and I doubt that most of my female friends think or do those things".
ariakas: (Default)

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-09-06 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? That's real life for me more than it is fandom. At least in fandom someone usually (and vehemently) corrects them. IRL sometimes it's someone in a position of power you'd risk your job/academic career/etc over if you took them to task for saying "women are x, men are y".

Hell I once had a (female, no less!) supervisor say "women don't enjoy sex" (with the implication that men do, and women like babies, so it all balances out).

My favorites are the "girls actually do [mundane thing]" posts, followed by "guys do this too!" Apparently people need confirmation that all genders do normal things like reflect on their day.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's because a large majority of fandom doesn't step foot out of their respective houses.

I'm in an IRL group that is full of various geeks of both genders that sit all over the sex/gender spectrum. We often disagree, but we also talk a lot about gender and sex and, whether it's Tumblr Feminists who are terrified of penises or Manboys on 4chan who want to destroy all vaginas (with their penises), we in the group all agree that these people are stupid, need to grow up, and need to spend time with the rest of the gender spectrum away from their little interweb clouds.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
But he licked me. I wouldn't lick a dude. There is a gulf between us and never the twain shall meet.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-09-06 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
My problem is more specifically that people think it's possible to describe an entire gender with a few words/sentences, regardless of whose side they are on. :|

But I actually don't see it that much in fandom? Maybe it's common in some places more than others? I see it in non-fandom places online quite a lot though.

beliefs? maybe wishes

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have noticed that some people want to take the opposite sex and try and fit them in a Desire box. And other people in an Other box with a frame of hostility. And many of us alternate.

I like being online and anonymous, able to switch between male and female spaces and voices. I get to see a lot of weird wank.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly see this from non-fandom blogs. As far as fandom goes, probably the worst are Superwholocks, and some dudes who like anime. Probably not that surprising.
