When you started off with legitimate criticisms, I was expecting how all female disney characters look the same, not legit stuff.

But yeah, it's kind of terrifying how much control Disney has in the entertainment market.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, just because one isn't as important to you doesn't mean its a not a legit criticism?

This is doubly true if you dare to suggest that going to any of the Disney theme parks isn't the world's best vacation. Oh yeah, people will be all like "oh well, more for me", but they'll also be sure to get in a lot of snarky remarks about how you're no fun and have lost touch with your inner child or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Walt Disney World was the worst amusement park when I was an actual child (9 or 10), so this argument has never made sense to me. 24/7 ads for Disney stuff, super expensive food, and hardly any roller coasters? Pfft. Cedar Point 4 life, bb.

You do know that the parks and the animation parts of disney are run by different people?

The Disney park fans can get very defensive. I am personally a fan of the movies but not the parks, even if I did enjoy Disneyland as a kid. I get that some people might have gotten on their case for "being too childish" or something, but even just saying you don't like Disneyland makes some of them angry.

I love going to Disney. Lucky for me, so do my parents and they always pay. (I'm well past the age where that's the default arrangement.)

But I have no problem referring to them as the evil empire in the next breath, and I don't mean it as a joke.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The people who act like Disney theme parks are objectively the best places in the world are the worst. Disney Land/World are basically theme parks + your childhood nostalgia wrapped up in one nice consumerist/capitalist package. If it makes you happy, good for you, but stop acting like I'm missing out in my life by not wanting to go to one.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Strangely enough, having been through parts of Asia, most of western Europe, the US, Canada and a bunch of islands all over, Disney still ranks high up there for me. Yeah, Angkor Wat can take your breath away, but Disney world really is its own kind of glee. Also Epcot rocks because food.

I see people talk about how deeply it impacted their childhood, never about their business practices...that's what i'm interested in reading about, how they made these movies and then supplemented peoples childhoods with it.and stunted their common sense too.

Yeah, I remember reading that they trademarked the name "Princess Aurora," despite the fact that they took the name "Aurora" from the Tchaikovsky ballet (which Disney also took some of the music from). I know Mattel was supposed to make a Barbie Sleeping Beauty movie (they already did adaptations of Tchaikovsky's other ballets), but had to cancel it because of the trademark controversy. Apparently, the trademark covers "all live-action and recorded movie, television, radio, stage, computer, Internet, news, and photographic entertainment uses, except literature works of fiction and nonfiction." Ugh :/ I'm assuming this affects all productions of the ballet now as well.

I'll admit, I used to inhale Disney stuff when I was younger, because that's what most of the kids growing up in the 90's did (disclaimer: I know not everyone did, just work with me here)... yet somehow, the *~magic*~ never really stuck with me into adulthood, and I don't know why. Granted, I thoroughly enjoyed 'Wreck-It Ralph' (as I felt it was the best Disney move I've seen in a long time) and was largely bored to tears during most of 'Frozen': so I guess I just grew out of the musical genre (with hyperactive sidekicks). =T Still looking forward to Big Hero 6, though.

... Although I do get a cringeworthy kick out of those animated crossover AMVs you see crop up every so often on YouTube. weeping b/c I didn't save that Scar/Duchess one set to Enrique Iglesas' "I Like It" when I had the chance

I am a big Disney fan and I still love a lot of their movies. That being said, the company has a lot that it can be criticized for and I have a lot of criticism for some of their movies as well. The insane amount of defensiveness some Disney fans have is rather mind-boggling. Like you can't love something without also being aware of its flaws. In the Disney RP group on tumblr I used to be in, some of the members got upset if you didn't like every single Disney film. It was a bit awkward.

Of course, my love for Disney could also be because of my love for animation and seeing as I'm wary of where they're going animation-wise, I'm not really feeling the same excitement for their upcoming movies as I used to.

Personally I've had more run-ins with obnoxious anti-Disney people who make baffling arguments about the movies but I can agree with this. I know the annoying fans who refuse to hear any criticism are out there. I'm just kind of sheltered in a bubble of people who enjoy criticizing things they like.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I follow Disney artists and love a lot of their films but I still think the company has a lot to answer for.

Mostly I really think it's getting into ridiculous amounts of power territory where I want the government to step in and break up the company. Disney has gotten to the point where they can do whatever they damn well please and no one can stop them (like they are always ready to go after people who abuse their copyright/trademark and yet they have openly stolen from artists repeatedly.) It's kind of scary.

These fans exist, but the anti-Disney fans on tumblr are often just as bad. Especially since so many of them criticize things in Disney and then turn a blind eye to other companies doing the same thing. Most of the problematic stuff in Disney's animated movies are industry wide problems, and you'll find the same stuff in Dreamworks, Sony, etc. animated flicks. Your argument loses a lot of ground when you're like "I refuse to see Frozen because it's all white people, ugh. By the way How to Train Your Dragon is the best movie ever, so perf."

Talking about the company on a broader scale though, yeah they're definitely monolithic. It's really, really scary how huge they are and how much they continue to grow (because it allows them to get away with more and more- that Deadmaus thing is ridiculous).

I find the mindless reblogging of Disney on tumblr very strange. It's as you said, it's made its way into many people's childhood so it somehow bypasses that part of the brain that controls active thought.

When I was a kid, I was taken to Disney moves and they were nice enough, but Disney itself as a company was seen as a bit trashy and cynical. Ao I don't get that sense of nostalgia that's evident in those tumblr posts.

Especially the theme parks. When I was a kid, there was talk of opening EuroDisney and I listened to the debate. The theme park itself was considered rather manipulative (as it was aimed at kids) expensive (as it ripped parents off) unsuited to the culture it was landing in, and just rather seedy in general. It was not universally welcomed.

I actually visited EuroDisney once to see what the fuss was about. I did find it rather shallow and dull. Being sited next to Paris, one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in the world, certainly doesn't do anything to help the comparison.

I am absolutely not surprised to find that any large company that likes to ride roughshod over local opinion also treats its own workers badly.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That behavior is not a Disney fans-only phenomenon. Seriously, try criticizing Harry Potter or Game of Thrones or Sherlock or, well, any other fandom around their fans. Tell me how well that goes.

The only difference is that Disney has been around a lot more time to collect fans.
