Recommend some nail polish brands for me, F!S?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been using Sally Hansen, but it's just not working. (By "not working", I mean "coming off as a single sheet about two weeks after I apply it".) What do you guys use? Any recommendations? Thanks!

Okay, I don't think you can expect nail polish to last for TWO WEEKS. Doesn't it start to chip before that, anyway? Or your nails grow enough that there's a noticeable gap between the nail polish and your cuticle?

I honestly have no idea which brands are long-wearing, since I like to change the color often enough that I usually remove it after a few days.

One of my favorites is Zoya, because I love the colors: http://www.zoya.com/

I also like Essie and China Glaze, as someone above mentioned. Revlon is good for dupes of super-expensive brands like Deborah Lippmann.

OP: It doesn't really chip much, I don't do enough with my hands that it's an issue. My nails do grow out, but I never really thought of it as that much of a problem. (Mine grow slowly.) And I didn't realize expecting two weeks was unreasonable; I've just gotten my first few bottles recently, and I don't know anyone who uses it, so I didn't really have much to go off.

Thanks for the references.

There are things like Shellac that are meant to last for a very long time. But regular nail polish will start to chip or peel after a while.

Try Shellac. You'll need a special ultralight and it's not cheap, but it last for two weeks.

Did you mean to say two days instead of two weeks? I think you did, but every polish I've used has chipped pretty severely after two weeks. (Though in one case I got lucky with Confetti polish, and it actually did last about two weeks. But that was a one time deal, so...) After about a week it's probably time to repolish.

I like Zoya and Wet N Wild Megalast a lot, but OPI, Essie, China Glaze, and Orly are all good. (I also have a few Maybelline Color Show that I like, and have had pretty good experiences with Finger Paints).

Wear really depends on a lot of things though, and every polish is different in that regard no matter what brand.

If you're having issues, one thing I find really useful is a rubberized base coat (I prefer ORLY's version of it.) It's a layer of polish that goes underneath whatever color you're using and helps the polish bond to the nail more effectively. A topcoat can also help, though that's more useful if it's coming off in chips rather than one sheet.

That said, though, I don't think you're going to get much longer than two weeks and a single application - though I've never over a week without significant chipping, so maybe I'm not one to talk!

Just chipping in (lol) to say that I think a topcoat is always a good thing to apply anyway.

And also to say that one week is probably what you (general you) should expect. I can often go about 10 days still feeling pretty good about how it looks, but that always comes with some minor chips/peels even so.

I've never had nail polish come off as a single sheet, but I've also never had nail polish - even good quality nail polish - look good after two weeks. I just don't think that's realistic tbh.

I'd say Essie is the best quality brand I've bought/used multiple times, but it's a bit pricier - about $8.50 a bottle ime. Revlon and OPI are also both pretty good, I think.

I really like Zoya (TONS of color options online and pretty long-lasting for me, plus they run nice promos reasonably often); IIRC, I can get at least two weeks with only minor tip wear. Usually that's when the nail growth is significant enough that I want to take the polish off anyway.

I'm suuuuper lazy, so I try to only need one coat (obviously only works if the polish is opaque enough), no top or base coat. Wrapping the top edge with polish helps with longevity, and *definitely* wipe down your nails with remover before you first apply polish (to remove oils and stuff that'll prevent the polish from adhering to the nail). In my experience, a single coat lasts longer without chipping than a base/color/top coat combo (or just two/three coats of color), but that's just me.
