If you actually paid attention to the storyline instead of ogling Emilia Clarke's tits you'd see that it's a subversion of the trope, with her actions in trying to fix foreign societies just ends up making things worse for everyone.

It's a Targaryan hereditary gentic marker- *almost* all of that family were born with purple toned eyes and silver hair.

So I guess that means the *entire* family is made up of Mary Sues then. Although, I have never heard that a *specific purple eye color* was a Mary Sue trait, myself.

Uh, it's a fantasy series, not sure why this combo would be an issue in a fantasy series. Especially one with...dragons. It's in the books.

In a meta examination, yes, there are startling comparisons you could draw (if you were willing to ignore the "White person marches in and takes over, makes everything turn to shit" analogue)

However, in the context of the story, she is technically a minority compared to the white people of westros. So depending on which side you favour, there is grounds for both positions.

what? have people actually tried to argue that? like, what is their rationale for believing that merely having silver hair and purple eyes makes her non-white?

Last time I checked, white skin = white, not eye colour or hair colour. A black dude with blue eyes doesn't stop being black. A Japanese girl with blonde hair doesn't stop being Asian, when it comes to ethnicity. Yes, it's odd and implies an ancestor of different ethnicity/racial make up but doesn't stop them having skin colour, which is what people look at when they call people black/white/etc. Either way, purple eyes is, honestly, a natural and possible eye colour for people, fucking rare but natural. Look it up. Albinos often have red and purple eye colours, and other peoples can appear purple. Either way, that and silver hair does not mean can't be white.

I remember watching a movie based on a true story about a daughter of two white Africans being born with black skin, brown eyes, brown hair etc and looked like she should have been the daughter of two black people, not white. She had to have papers from the government and everything classifying her as white. I think a plot point came up that the government changed the rules so race wasn't determined by parentage but racial traits, so she got reclassified as black and had to move out of her parents house and move to the black area and was only able to talk to black folk etc. I forget how this relates back to what I was saying, but racism is fucking nuts, people.

Well, yeah, if you said she wasn't white that would be stupid. If you pointed out her plans are going to go to shit because turning up and trying to change an entire economy overnight and expecting it to work because you're more civilised you'd be right though.

I really wish people would shut up about this.

I would argue that it is less "white saviour" in the books, at least. Unless I'm misremembering things (which is always possible since I don't particularly care about Dany's storyline most of the time), I don't think the book slaves were stated to be of any particular race.

The show however definitely made it that way, which can only be partially explained away by the logistics of filming in Africa.
