lol yeah, he did that only after revealing the prophecy to Voldemort in the first place, trying desperately to sell out Harry and James in exchange for Lily's safety (because she would TOTALLY be okay with having her beloved husband and newborn son murdered while she was living it up. And she TOTALLY wouldn't beat the shit out of Snape for even suggesting that.) and then only agreed to protect Harry after Dumbledore guilted the everloving fuck out of him. What a guy.

Funny how Harry after knowing all of this still considered Snape a good man .

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not the same as saying that he's better than James you wackadoodle

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't responding to that part of the argument, Einstein.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Harry's taken a lot of blows to the head.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I snorted. And I'm a Snape fan. (I agree btw)

ayrt

...okay? That doesn't mean the reader has to think he's one.

Character A thinking that Character B is a good person is a very poor argument for Character B actually being a good person.

Given Harry's relationship with Snape it isn't. Context is everything.

No, it still is, because Harry is still human, and as such has flaws and biases. Harry may personally view Snape as being a good person due to Snape's final actions and in spite of Snape's treatment of him, but that does not mean that Snape was actually a good person. Characters (and people, for that matter) should be judged according to their behavior, not according to how others view them (even if one of those others happens to be the POV character).

It also should be said that characters generally aren't wholly good or wholly bad. A character who is a bad person can still do good things, and a character who is a good person can still do bad things.

I'm not sure I agree with you.

DA

Because Harry's the big damn hero and most of the story is from his perspective. And although Harry has made some poor decisions, I think the argument could be made that, in the end, the narrative supports his judgment. Even if I don't think Snape is all that good a person, I don't think it's a poor argument.

If that's the only way you can think of to respond, then I'm just going to assume that you're trolling for Snape wank. And I approve of this, although I think you should step it up. Snape wank was always the most fun Harry Potter wank to me, even if it's also the most frustrating.

I've already responded to the same point multiple times already. You're viewing his arc from a very cynical frame of mind as opposed to what Rowling intended.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You still aren't trying. Come on, we know that the author's intentions aren't the be-all end-all when it comes to interpreting a work. People make whole dissertations out of analyzing a work from different perspectives

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I hold Rowling's views over some anon's.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
But Rowling doesn't think he's a hero or anything like that. She flat out says that he's still a spiteful bully. She concedes that he's brave, but it's obvious she thinks there's a difference between being a good person and being brave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBLqWffUSWI

na

I like how she doesn't even try to sugar coat it for the eight year olds or talk down to him. She's basically just like "yeah, he absolutely wouldn't have protected any child unrelated to Lily. Sorry kids". I respect that

Harry just wanted peace. Of all people, Harry is the last person to carry a drama queen grudge endlessly (unlike, say, Snape).

And he never said a good man. He called Snape brave. I pretty much agree with Harry's take at the end. Guy was a flaming asshole but didn good and difficult things behind the scenes. Fascinating person but yes, he was a jerk. Let's move on.

I love how Snape fans dismiss every opinion Harry ever had as worthless--EXCEPT when they're bringing up "Harry thought Snape was the bravest man."
