Is there stand-up comedy for not-racist, not-sexist, not-homophobic, not-ageist people?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My dad put on Louis CK stand up and I thought he was supposed to be really funny, but it's actually a pretty homophobic, racist show. I guess I see who it caters to (people like my dad and mom and brothers), but I can't laugh any more at it. I hate watching this stuff because my boyfriend likes it and he calls me "too pc" for not liking it and it's annoying. Anyway, is there any comedy anymore that isn't racist, homophobic, sexist, ageist, fatphobic, or is offensive the name of the game in comedy?

I don't think this is a sincere question, and I'm not sure how to interpret those qualities, because when you get into questions of comedy it gets complicated.

For instance, Stewart Lee makes a number of comments about race that are clearly and obviously intended to satirize racists in the context of a routine that is explicitly about political correctness being a good thing. Does that count as being racist for your purposes?

(I think you might mean general comedy? Or is it just that I'm thinking of Louie?)

I have no idea. I think some of it is more about drawing that line. But I mean, I can't even go to humor websites half the time because I'll quickly realize they were created by twenty year old frat boys pretending they get crazy laid by all these crazy women. (CollegeHumor, for one.)

I find this comment to be unintentional comedy.

Louis CK is far from homophobic and racist, though he doesn't shy away from using terms that others deem offensive. He follows Carlin's train of thought that there are no bad words, and that context matters more than the words.

If you want an inoffensive comic, you could always pull up an old Jeff Foxworthy clip.

Gabriel Iglesias is mostly safe if you stay away from his "Racist Gift Basket" bit. Since you probably wouldn't find it funny.

hm-mm, Tim Minchin is pretty progressive, but he has a grudge against religion.

If you're asking for a completely sanitized and political correct stand up comic, then you're probably out of luck. Even comics like Bill Cosby, who has a lot of material that's fairly clean in comparison to most well known stand up comics, has material that can be construed as insensitive. But still, his stand up along with Ellen Degeneres and maybe Jerry Seinfeld (I haven't heard too much of his stuff, but what I listened to didn't seem too offensive or vulgar) will probably be your best bet. But even then, you're bound to run into something that could offend your sensibilities.

You can try Adam Hill. He's pretty safe.

The late Mitch Hedberg was great.

I've only really heard some of his material on This American Life, but Mike Birbiglia is a pretty safe comedian and he's incredibly funny.

Probably Bill Cosby? He barely ever even swears:

"So I asked him, 'tell me, what is it about cocaine that makes it so wonderful?' And he said 'well, it intensifies your personality.' And I said 'yes, but what if you're an asshole?'"

Dara O'Briain. He does make some gay jokes, but there a pretty mild* and nothing compared to his mocking of hate groups. He once received a ~letter of support~ from some homophobe group after he made a (self-admitteldy really sad sad) joke about Elton John and he mocked it pretty thoroughly during his stage tour.

*In general, the UK and Ireland aren't that concerned with PC, everyone's fair game including themselves. That said, Dara did shot down the phrase "Fuck the PC" rather hilariously that one time.

Milton Jones. Quick fire, inventive one-liners. I've never known him to be offensive.

Nope.

I mean such comedians exist. but they aren't funny so they don't get shows.

Every funny joke that's ever really gotten mass appeal, and subsequently, every comedian that has had those jokes and done the same? They in fact joke about something horrible.

That's what humor IS. We find joy in mirth else we'd find madness and bitterness.

I find it really hard to believe that you actually watched Louis CK, since he's a pretty non-racist, non-homophobic, and non-sexist person and comic (I'm thinking of that one episode of his show where a gay guy explained exactly why "faggot" is an offensive term, and the one where a chubby woman explained just how hurtful and offensive it is to be dismissed because of her weight). And I can't think of any specific instances off the top of my head, but I seem to recall him making fun of the hypocrisy of bigots, as well.

Margaret Cho? I mean she swears and talks about sex a lot so she might offended some people.

You might have a difficult time, because IMO, the best comedy doesn't have very many off-limits subjects, it's just more thoughtful about how those subjects are treated.

That said:

* Greg Davies - British comedian. His "Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog" DVD is one of the funniest things I've seen in my life, most of his comedy is self-deprecating and he's one of the few comedians I know of who doesn't take vicious potshots at people but still manages to be really funny.
* Dara O'Briain - Irish comedian who's a math/science geek. Also an atheist, but not particularly combative about it.
* Tim Minchin - Austalian musician/comedian who IS more combative about atheism, but in a funny way. See: Storm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtYkyB35zkk
* Sarah Millican - English comedian, very bawdy and all round hilarious, THE most successful female comedian in the UK
* Michael McIntyre - English comedian, most successful male comedian. I'd say his humor suffers because he's not at all edgy (unless you see him in panel shows which are more spontaneous and IMO, funnier) but he's not bad.

I know I heard a comedian talk about keeping clean, but I don't remember who right now. Will look later tonight.

John Mulaney is adorkable. He curses a little and some bits touch on religion, age, and alcoholism, but they're pretty mild an inoffensive. If nothing else, YouTube "The Salt and Pepper Diner."

Brian Regan and Eddie Izzard

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Brian Regan mostly makes jokes about food, school, finding a gym, while Eddie Izzard's are historical/culturally based (generally.) They're both very entertaining without being offensive.

Depending on where you fall on what's offensive, Steven Wright? He does short jokes and one-liners, though iirc a few are about depression and suicide. Maybe Tig Notaro, too, although her second album specifically deals with cancer and death in her personal life.

Maybe try Jim Gaffigan. He makes lots of jokes about food and relaxing.

One-liner comedians: Tim Vine, Milton Jones

Michael McIntyre is pretty safe stuff. Mainstream observational comedy.

Adam Hills. Josie Long. Susan Calman. Thom Tuck. David O'Doherty. Tim Key. Josh Widdicombe. Hannah Gadsby. John Robins. James Acaster. Sara Pascoe. Simon Amstell. Mark Watson. Mark Cooper-Jones. Alex Horne. Bridget Christie. Tom Wrigglesworth. Luisa Omielan.

... I'm pretty sure there's more.

I know this is probably late... but maybe try Aziz Ansari?

Also a couple of Aussie Muslim guys did a standup show recently and are touring around, and they poke fun at racists. They're pretty damn hilarious. Can't remember their names though (maybe Aziz Ansari is one of them?) But if you google "Australian Muslim comedians" they should pop up in search. :)

(And I know what you mean, OP. I honestly believe comedy can be funny without kicking people who are already down.)
