Rap recs

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I've been listening to a lot of rap lately, but sometimes the shallow stuff they play on the radio annoys me, especially the objectification of women. So do you guys have any suggestions for rappers who don't have sexist or homophobic shit in their lyrics?

I don't really notice sexist or homophobic stuff so I might be wrong on this, but I like Missy Elliot and Angel Haze and I'm pretty sure they fit your criteria.

I'm not big on Eve, but I'm pretty sure she fits too.

For the reasons you mentioned, most of the rappers I like are women. I'm a fan of Iggy Azalea and Dessa especially.

Fort Minor (aka Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park's solo project): not entirely inoffensive stuff, but it's carefully thought-out in the way it promotes or addresses issues.

Flobots: white kid rap to be sure, but it's still ethical, conscience-driven work that's meant to inspire. Even if some might criticize it for coming from a place of privilege.

Gorillaz: some of the original lyrical poets. Lots of good songs to choose from, lots of relevance even today.

Action Bronson: rec. Pouches of Tuna.

There are more out there obviously, but starting here is a pretty good selection of stuff to let you figure out what you're into.

I love the first Flobots album (Fight with Tools). Seconding Fort Minor, too.

Lupe Fiasco generally has some great thought provoking stuff. He's pretty outspoken, but I get a genuine feeling that he really believes that rap is way too misogynistic and I really like that.
Some of Kid Cudi's stuff is good too, but after awhile he went right on trend with most other rappers and began rapping about just the really shallow stuff.
I haven't listened to a lot of Childish Gambino or Kendrick Lamar but of the songs I have heard, they're both pretty good.
And I'm sure you've listened to Macklemore? I hadn't listened to "The Heist" in awhile and I listened to it again last week, and it's a pretty good album all around, it's just "Thrift Shop" and "Same Love" got tiring because they were played so much last year.

I don't listen to a lot of rap, but I did get a bit more into it when I began watching the Rap Critic. He's really worth watching. He reviews and critiques rap music, and he's educated me a lot on rap music. His rapping is pretty good too.

Some of it is tongue in cheek, but Childish Gambino can be pretty disrespectful towards women in his lyrics.

Sage Francis is pretty great, and I like Saul Williams, too. I'm fond of Mos Def, too, but he did say something homophobic in a song (the song in question was taken off the album he was working on at the time, but supposedly for some other reason).

Nerdcore got me into rap. I was listening to some nerdcore when I was... probably about 15 or 16, and it got me thinking, and I was like "Why I am listening to some dumb idiots talking about how they enjoy a bunch of stories, when I could listen to people actually telling stories instead?" So then I downloaded some Wu Tang albums and they were great and so I stopped listening to nerdcore. And that's the story of how I'm the whitest person in history.

You know what got me into rap? An Xzibit song on Duke Nukem: Music to Score By.

I don't get it either, but still, every summer I revisit Xzibit's 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz album. S'a good album.

So I guess if I were any whiter I'd be kissing my sister at a Skynard concert.

Now, that being said, I have some nerdcore rapper friends, one of whom I went to school with.

I think what gets me is how terribly segregated it is. Rap is rooted in African-American culture, and yet I can't tell you how many times I heard some goon say "I only listen to GOOD rap like (white guy who raps about video games.)" At least black artists like Mega Ran and Alpha Riff (disclaimer: Alpha Riff is a personal IRL friend of mine) have made a name for themselves.

It's definitely big on the radio, but Macklemore is actually really good rap that isn't offensive.

Check out Astronautalis, OP! I'm not usually that big of a rap fan mainly due to the reasons you've listed, but I like Astronautalis a lot.

To copy-paste from Wikipedia:
"Astronautalis has been described as "if Beck were a decade or so younger and had grown up more heavily immersed in hip-hop,"[4] with his rapping style noted for "blending styles of indie rock, electro, and talkin’ blues"[5] with hip-hop. He has described himself as "historical fiction hip-hop."[6]"

Unfortunately finding stuff like that that isn't a bunch of white guys rapping about Mass Effect or whatever can be hard. :(

You'll have to look up 1980s rap, particularly the women. Some of the men (sexist/homophobic stuff was starting toward the end of the decade, I think), but usually the women.
