Can we bring IP logging back?

It feels like the trolls have noticed it's gone and are starting to trickle back in, and I don't want this place to get as toxic as it's been again.

I know some people are paranoid of getting "doxxed" or something, but if we turn IP logging back on we could make people aware that it's just you that sees them and peoples' IPs are never exact anyway. (For example, my IP points to a town 20 miles away.)

The abortion thread was almost completely civil. I'm really surprised that got frozen and not the Israel thread, which was way more hostile.

The abortion thread OP asked for it to be closed, so case froze it.

The Israel thread got heated really late and nobody reported it, so I'm not sure if case caught it.

I'm wondering what the precedent is for freezing non-wanky threads upon request. That's not really fair for any of the participants. I think if you start a thread in GC, you should be willing to accept that it might become a site of conversation for people who are not OP.

I gotta say that I agree with you. I understand wanting to be accommodating to the people who come here and make sure that they're comfortable, but I don't like the idea that a conversation can be shut down just because the person who started the thread has lost interest.

It was reported, but it was done so late into the conversation, so it was able to get very heated, very quickly.

Honest question, not being sarcastic: How could one get doxxed if IP logging is on and Case doesn't/isn't the one doxxing them, because I feel like from what I know of how IP Logging works on here, you'd need to be an administrator or have outside tools to get dox info, and if the latter is true I don't see how IP logging would matter either way.

Out of curiosity, WOULD you ever dox someone, even to a specific person? Like if Chard asked for her hater's IP, or Dethtoll asked you to tell him Fedora Anon's IP?

Both those examples, no way.

I've said it before, but the furthest I'd go is to point out that anon1 in this thread is the same as anon2/anon3/anon4, and this thread is just wankbait, etc. I wouldn't ever link a user to an IP, though. Even if user, anon1, anon2, and anon3 were all the same people, I'd say all the anons are the same, but not bring the user in.

The thing is that the troll anons do make legitimate comments too. Which is nice, they're actual participants in the community sometimes and not 100% here to troll. They can be pretty okay people when they're not making up stories!

Is there anything you'd ever report an IP for? Like for illegal activity to authorities, not other users.

Anything ever? Of course! But it'd have to be really drastic, like someone/something (like as in serious animal abuse, like burning a cat, not like a mosquito)'s life were in danger, and anon would ALSO have to be able to prove they are who they claim to be and they are where they are and that any of it's real... otherwise it could just as well be someone lying and trolling and trying to get someone else in trouble.

It's the internet - it's too easy for everything to be fake. I could post all over the place that I live in ____ town and am going to shoot up ____ school and have no plans to do any of that and just want to shock people. I wouldn't report stuff or something unless I saw people posting enough evidence for it to possibly be real (like "here is a card with 'fandomsecrets' + the date written on it, and here are my guns, and here is some floor plan of my school or something" - just as an example, it'd differ situation-by-situation of course).
