I wanted to like the game, I really did.

But it's awful.

Forced 1280x768 resolution, no pause or options menu, hitting escape closes the game without warning. This is not acceptable, I've not seen something so lazy in a while.

No subtitles. I know it's more to ask than basic game features like a friggin' pause or options menu, but on top of everything else it's just salt in the wound.

But dethtoll, I hear you ask, what about the GAME? Well, the entire game is built on jump scares that you can see coming a mile away. It does have a good sense of style and is a relatively unique concept, and it's clear the developer has some creativity -- hopefully he applies his earnings towards developing a better game, because this one is too fatally flawed.

Maybe if I were 16 (the year I played Resident Evil for the first time) and had a 5:4 monitor I'd love this. As it is I can't recommend it to anyone except teenagers and the most die-hard consumers of cheap indie horror gimmick games, and the Venn diagram of those two groups are almost a circle.

Because you're so mature you have to call anyone who like something you don't a stupid teenager or someone into cheap gimmick games.

Where did I say anyone was a "stupid" teenager?

Oh, right, I didn't. But this trend of gimmicky indie horror games like Slenderman (you'll note I didn't say anything about their overall quality, just that Freddie's in particular sucks) seem to be really popular with the under-21 set, so..... what was your point again?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You use it and phrase it like an insult, regardless. Like you're above it because it's "cheap" and "only teenagers or people less mature than me will like it." And this isn't the first time I've seen you being elitist (and yes, that's immature) about things you dislike.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-09-08 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
When I said "cheap" I meant "inexpensive," Christ what do you want?

You're inferring an awful lot. Stop.

Considering cheap can easily (and often does) mean "shoddy" or "of poor quality," maybe learn to read over your posts so that your distaste and elitism doesn't show through.
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-09-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe you could just stop reading whatever the fuck you want out of my posts.

I could say the sky is blue and you'd call that elitist.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
"consumers of cheap indie horror gimmick games"

"consumers of poor quality indie horror gimmick games"

"consumers of inexpensive cost-wise indie horror gimmick games"

Which one makes more sense, I wonder?

You used common slang that means "poor quality" in a sentence that easily leads to that meaning, and you're pissed more than one person read it that way.

To bring back and old meme: intent isn't fucking magical. The fact that this isn't the first time someone has called you on this should tell you something.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-09-09 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well excuse the fuck out of me I didn't write my comment to your exact fucking specifications. I'm not pissed about anything except one anon giving me shit because she didn't like that I don't like a game and said a few nasty things about it.

Why do you even fucking care? Clearly you don't like me so why even waste your time?

lol it seems pretty easy to ignore any concept of a communication breakdown happening over the internet, go anon, and cry a little. I personally don't bother with anons like that anymore.

Anyways, I'm always interested in what you have to say about stuff like this. Even if I haven't played the game (which I haven't, and probably never will).

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I read that teenager part as the fact that when you were 16 you weren't old enough to have experienced the gamut of horror games that depend on gimmicky jump scares to be "scary." So Resident Evil and it's jump scares scared you at the time, like it would anyone else with the same amount of experience with horror games. Therefore, you wouldn't recommend it to anyone but those new to the genre, because those still work on them, therefore they might enjoy it while you didn't.

It's clear to me. /shrug

YESTHISEXACTLYCHRIST

I mean I suppose I could be more clear, but I'm not obligated to explain myself to people who seem to only care about criticizing everything I say.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Feh, it's the same with fanfic, and people creaming themselves over tropey cliche high school AU fics that the rest of us who have been in fandom for a long time are like "not ANOTHER one" at. I would have liked that when I was 14. That doesn't make the fics bad, just extremely common and not particularly noteworthy. That also doesn't make 14 year old me stupid, just new.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
This is it exactly. It relies entirely on jump scares for its horror, so if you've played any amount of horror games, you're not gonna find it scary.

It would've worked better if it interspersed the jump scares with something else, but when you're anticipating jump scares, the effect is lost.

Welp I'll accept my bad taste then, because I find this game both hilarious and terrifying.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-09-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for the part where I said anything about bad taste.

People read too much into my posts.

alrighty.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
If you consistently come across a certain way to multiple people, that kind of points to there being something about your style that...well, comes across a certain way.
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-09-09 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
You keep saying "multiple people" as if you expect me to believe you're not all the same anon typing in the exact same style every time.

I don't even know where Nan got "bad taste" from. That was out of left field.

And anyway I'm not obligated to explain myself to you or anyone else, so seriously, just drop it already.

It's not about explaining yourself; it's about not getting defensive and dismissive when someone thinks you've come across like a jerk. What would be so awful about not doing that?
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-09-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
How do you expect me to react to a comment like this:

"Because you're so mature you have to call anyone who like something you don't a stupid teenager or someone into cheap gimmick games."

Should I just say OH YES ANON YOU ARE TOTALLY CORRECT I AM A FUCKING DIPSHIT *SELF-FLAGELLATE*?

Would that make you happy? Clearly my initial answer, where I asked where I said anything about "stupid" or the quality of indie horror games, was just too ~DEFENSIVE and DISMISSIVE~ for your delicate sensibilities.

I'm really done with this conversation. Don't fucking lecture me about my ~tone~ when you're deliberately being provocative yourself.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really not trying to be provocative. It's a touchy thing, but I'm honestly trying to be civil about it.

If that's the end of it, though, then enjoy the rest of your night.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-09-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Try harder. I will too, but I'm not obligated to be polite to people whose opening comment is an insult and a cartoonishly outsized misunderstanding.

I dunno, I played this game and thought it was really scary, the teddy bears kept doing stuff and it really unnerved me and as I was playing it my girlfriend came in and asked if I was okay and because the game kept me so on edge I got scared and pooped myself a little, she didn't notice so I tried to play it cool, you know? But then she wouldn't go away and she sat next to me wanting to watch me play the game and kept talking about it and I just wanted her to leave so I could clean myself up and change my pants but she wouldn't go away, and eventually she was all like "do you smell that?" and I got really nervous and I started sweating and I tried to act like nothing was wrong and then the smell got worse and she stated to look at me funny, so I thought I'd try and act like I had something else to do and leave but as I got up all the spaghetti fell out of my pockets, I tried to clean it up with my socks but it just kept pouring out and my girlfriend kicked me in the balls and left.

True story.
