What if instead of IP-logging all commenters, we just logged anons -- and only when trolliness is an issue. It won't fix all problems and concerns, but I think it could ease minds of named users who sometimes want a little anonymity.

A named user could just as easily reply to themselves pretending to troll in order to start wank and I wouldn't know it's a bait thread, though.

People just don't like anything which de-anonimizes an anon community, no matter how slight. People are getting more and more concerned about preserving their online privacy in whichever way they can, no matter how small. We might not be able to keep things private from the NSA and the GCHQ, but we should at least be allowed to keep it secret from Case. It isn't much to ask, but now we aren't even allowed that!?

For me it's just that when IP logging is on I self-censor myself to a ridiculous degree, because I'm always afraid "What if this honest statement is viewed as overly hostile, even though I didn't necessarily mean it that way," and then I'm labeled as one of *those* people.

tl;dr: Paranoia and anxiety bring self-censorship to a point that goes beyond "maybe I shouldn't call that person an entitled brat, even though they're acting like it." It's tiring and not fun.

Sometimes I think people don't understand what an IP address is. I had a friend, an adult who has spent plenty of time online, who asked me if someone could use his IP address to hack his computer.

IP addresses don't even make you that much less anon -- there are thousands of people out there right now with the same exact IP as yours.

That takes a lot of research to figure out which ones are safe and not everyone has the technical know how on how to use them or feel comfortable.

If you're so freaked out about privacy that you can't handle IP logging, then one would think you'd take the time to do something like that. The burden's kind of on you, here.

Dude, it tells you when IP logging is on when you try to post a comment. It says exactly this:

Notice: This account is set to log the IP addresses of everyone who comments.

If you don't bother to read that, I don't know how case mentioning it is going to help. No one's fault but yours if you get caught in your shit stirring.

Because of the placement of the message, it is easy to miss on some screens. Now that, obviously, is not Case's fault. That is a Dreamwidth problem, and also the font is just regular font so it is easy for the eye to skip over if you are not consciously looking for it, which is why Case should be highlighting when it is on. Especially since the default is for it to be off. Why is it such a big deal with you that we accept IP logging and not want to be told?

You are told, but not by case. Stop expecting people to hold your hand, and pay a little more attention before you post your trolling (or regular comments, whatever.) Not that difficult.
