Practical Life Shit.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-12 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Okay so I know I said I was taking a break but...I need some advice.

I need to find a way to earn a secondary source of money because as per my rent agreement I only ever see half of my paychecks.

I want to raise up enough money so at some point I can actually go out and meet up with my boyfriend in person someday.

I mean I need legal stuff...and stuff that involves me doing something... I don't feel comfortable AT ALL with taking money for nothing.

I'd really like to be ready to move out at least in 2015 or 2016.

Depending on where you live:

I suggest tutoring (if you feel capable of doing/are okay with kids/ whoever you plan on tutoring), babysitting (again, are you okay with kids). If you have a mayor's office or something, I know that where I live, there tends to be job postings at the office where my borough representative works...

If these don't appeal, try a part time at a local chain pharmacy or bakery type deal (i.e. CVS, Walmart, w/e).

I don't really know what your career/job/education situation is, so hope this helps!

The most important part is to always have a little bit of cash that you take out from each check (be it $5 or $20), be consistent and DO NOT touch that cash.

Good luck!

Thank you so much OMG.

Okay I'm already a part time cashier at Harris Teeter. I've considered babysitting but everytime I bring it up, I'm usually reminded "you can't take care of a kid , you can barely take care of yourself" *rolls eyes* Tutoring is an interesting idea.

I have 1 year of college and no degree. I would like to get a job close to the current one because I don't drive. Never got to learn.

*nod* I think I can do that....not touching one bit of cash, maybe if I get a bank account with a savings account.

Thank you.

If that one year of college included math classes or any language classes, you're off to a great start. High school students are always looking for extra help.

Well, there's a lot of stuff you're going to have to work out for yourself here. How much do you need to save, and in what time scale? Then, from there, you can work out how much you need to be earning in your second job and start searching accordingly.

Most job sites have a 'part time' search filter.

Re: Practical Life Shit.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-12 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well I already have one part time job. So I know about the applying bit.

Personally I was considering art commissions of some kind although....I am still unsure if A.) I'm good enough and B.) I'll be payed any attention to if I advertise.

I think I need to save at least like...700 some for traveling. and then 700 more to get back or conversely a bit of money for living if I plan on staying there.

Also I need to talk to doctors about medication stuff and all that if I plan on leaving...@.@. One thing at a time though. first money.

Are you paying rent to your parents? If that's the case, is there any kind of household activity they would consider accepting as a form of in-kind rent (e.g., lawn care, snow removal, errands, pet care, etc.)?

Yes. I am.

Nah chores are considered compulsory as is the whole "you live here , you contribute deal".

If you can write nonfiction reasonably well, there are several sites where you can write web content and blog posts for various clients, usually for search engine optimization/content marketing purposes. Interact Media and Vertical Measures are a couple of the sites I know of (and I write for the former), but there are others as well. You get paid on a per-piece basis and can take on as many or as few jobs as you feel comfortable with.

Hmmm

There's an idea. Nonfiction can be easier than writing fiction on demand. (I'm still working on that requested story from months ago about someone's character, I find myself faltering because I don't know the ins and outs of this character like they do and ehhh) So yeah.... I think I can do that then

I'll look into that one thanks.

You're asking at the right time for seasonal work. If you're in an area where trick or treating for Halloween is a thing and you're near kids, go talk to the parents about taking their kids around for them. I used to charge five bucks a kid for the night, and that's a pretty good chunk of change for a few hours with ten kids.

Re: Practical Life Shit.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-12 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh

That's a really good idea. I've heard my neighborhood does Halloween pretty big.

I'll add that to my list of ideas.

Thanks.

DA

Speaking of seasonal jobs, you could offer to rake up leaves for your neighbors for a reasonable privd. Most people hate doing that so you might be able to make a few extra bucks that way.

Big box stores and places like Barnes and Noble also hire extra, temporary workers for the holiday season. Plus there are those stores that set up for a month before Halloween to sell costumes.

Got a temp agency near you? Things might've changed what with the economy going to shit, but clerical jobs can often hit that sweet spot of no degree + decent pay. If you can type, know your way around computers a little and can brush up on stuff like spreadsheets, hit them up.

UPDATE

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-12 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
So if I can wait a little extra he and his family will be moving to Virginia which is right above us.

If I can pull thru till then I will really be able to save on travel expenses. I just hope and pray that it works out that way.

Re: UPDATE

Look, dude. This is all stuff you have to sort out for yourself. Let us know how you're getting on sure, or ask advice. Maybe quit looking for answers to your life problems here though.

Re: Practical Life Shit.

People have given you some good advice about a secondary source of money, so I won't add to that.

Re: budgeting, I would first work out how much money you need for this trip. Then, work out how much money of what you see of your paycheck you can put away. Basically, minus necessities and spending money from what you see of your paycheck. Don't skimp on your spending money, make sure it will cover the little things you do during the week like getting a coffee or seeing a movie once in a while, and remember to think about budgeting for things like birthday presents - you don't want to be left short during the week and have to touch your savings. Anything extra you don't spend you can put in your savings later.

The money left over is what you can afford to put into your savings every week/fortnight.

Then, calculate how long it would take you to reach your savings goal. If it would take too long, re-calculate how much extra money you would need to put away to reach your goal when you want to reach your goal by. That should help give you an indication of what type of extra job/pay you want to get (e.g. another part time job completely vs tutoring an hour a fortnight). It will also give you an idea of how realistic your savings goal is - and believe me, it's better to know that your plan isn't feasible now rather than in two years when you're halfway through your trip and realise you don't have any money for food.

Good luck!

Thank you for all that. It really helps, I'll remember that.

I think allowing for spending money is a good idea for me because I do tend to want to spend at times and never spending money would be miserable for me.

I;m still thinking about how much to put away. I mean I remember hearing somewhere that a guy saved every $5 he ever got and eventually had a bunch of money.I'm thinking of putting away a $20 or two every week.

Also if I wait a little longer and save , and then come when he's in Virginia that's much less travelling.

Thank you.

Have you checked your state's laws on prostitution? Generally most states have a loophole you can use.

...No

Nope. Yeah that's not happening.

I still have to live in my parents' house for now and there's no way I'd ge away with doing that.

Also I don't feel comfortable with that at all....so..no

One more thing that might be available to you, depending on where you live, is seasonal agricultural work. If there are pick-your-own orchards or pumpkin farms where you live, they may need extra people to man produce stands, load trucks, pick produce or work machinery like cider presses.

Depending on what farmers grow in your part of the world, there may also be seasonal labor in the spring and early summer. It used to be a rite of passage for kids in my home state to detassel corn and "walk" soybeans, and while GM crops have eliminated some of that, some corn is still detasseled and organic crops need to be tended and (if they're raised for seed) "rogued." Much of the time, the work is done by teens and the crew leader arranges the transportation, so it doesn't require you to have your own car. Detasseling, in particular, is nasty work by all accounts, but it does pay.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-12 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh

Well that sounds like something I can do.

I'll look into that, and see if I can find anything like that. A place that provides transportation is also nice.

Thank you very much.
