Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping people don't dismiss this immediately when they see it has to do with race - I know we had a lot of racial wank threads started fairly recently.

I have someone who I'm friends with on Facebook, and lately, he's started posting a lot of stuff about how "all groups are allowed to love their race/be proud of their race, except for white people!" Or sometimes, replace "white people" with "native [of European country]."

He also posted a rant about how people think it's okay for any other group of people to forbid marrying outside the race/group/tribe/etc. but people would call him racist if he said the same thing. Apparently marrying outside his ethnicity (so I guess not only do they have to be white, but a native of his country, whose ancestors were all from his country) would be against his religious beliefs.

And of course, immigration is wrong.

But he insists he doesn't see any race as better than the others. He just thinks they should all stick to their own countries and not marry outside their own ethnic groups.

So now I'm unsure if this type of opinion is racist. Usually the people who are against immigration and interracial marriage are, but is it still racist if you don't see one race as superior or inferior?

This is the type of memes that he keeps reposting:

Yeah...that's pretty racist. If he doesn't see any race as better or worse why is he so bent on keeping them separate?

Aren't you aware that the Zionist Owned Government (ZOG) is trying to destroy the white race through immigration and race-mixing?! First the immigrants will take all your jobs, leaving you and your families destitute. Then they'll probably kill you or rape you/your wife/your daughter, and no one will prosecute them for fear of being called racist. Then they'll brainwash your children through the Jewish Owned Media. And finally, they'll breed with your women, leaving no pure whites left and breeding out all white physical traits. And then, the world will belong to them and their easily-ruled brown minions!

Sheesh, wake up!

THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY

Not racist so much as garden variety xenophobia. Racism is usually more specific than "I think all foreigners suck and we should never interact with them."

I would agree with you if it weren't for the "but white people can't" stuff. That explicitly makes it about race rather than merely foreigner vs. non-foreigner. Also, it smacks of the feeling of persecution felt by people who fear losing their (dare I use the word) privilege.

IME those views have an extremely high correlation with being a racist. I don't think the views are necessarily technically racist in themselves, and it is, I suppose, remotely possible that someone could have them without being a racist. But usually, most of the time, someone with those views is just a racist. Maybe a racist who says they're not a racist, but a racist. So, you know, odds are...

but people would call him racist if he said the same thing.

Can he really not think of why people of color might not want to marry someone white. There's a fair bit of anxiety that goes with it -'do they like me for me or my skin color?'

??? is this a common mentality? i've seen the opposite claimed - i.e., black guys date white girls stereotype - so i guess it surprises me that everybody thinks ppl are marrying them for skin color?

Sounds really racist to me. I side-eye people who say people are racist for simply not wanting to date/marry out of their own race, though. Who you share your body/life with is your own personal choice, and really, that's something that shouldn't be 'equal opportunity'.

Agreed, but in this case it's somebody telling everybody else what do to with their dating preferences, at which point I think the line is squarely stepped over.

It's the 'I'm not dating people of this particular race because of some racist stereotype' that grinds me.

...oh, Christ. Is this guy an Odinist?

And yes, he is racist. The giveaway is the "but it's not okay for white people to do this thing that I think all other races/ethnicities are allowed to do."

Re: Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?

Yep... or sort of! I just looked at his religion, and it's "Wodenism" and Woden is the English form of Odin, I think.

Yeah, that's racist and xenophobic. At first I was like "eh, not racist, just flawed logic", but when I got there...

That second one looks like an ad for incest.

But seriously, I agree with those saying xenophobia verging on racism.

Re: Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-09-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The first two are some of those awkard things that irregardless of how right they are are just kinda stupid to bring up ever (and, not unlike the whole "it's okay to hit a woman if she hit you" thing yesterday, is one of those things that even if it objectively makes sense rarely is spoken by objective people), and usually bringing it up outside of very specific discussions is a mark against you.

the third one is just straight up xenophobic though. And the pictures clinch it. No other way around it. And that pretty much damns the first two as well, cause if that's the way he feels, the context is pretty obvious.

Sorry dude. Your friend has some fucking issues.

I mean he's right insofar as we're probably overly accepting and non-critical of insular communities who refuse to meaningfully interact with outsiders, but there are arguments you can make for being cautious there. That doesn't make his 'seperate but equal' shit okay.

Those facebook links scream straight to crazy racist town though.

Nonsense.

As George Carlin once put it, no one should be "proud" of their race/ethnicity, as it is nothing more than an accident of birth.

If immigration is wrong, then everyone in the world should simply move back to the heart of Africa. Then we could all stick to our own country.

It sounds like your "friend" is in love with being a supposed victim of reverse racism, and is looking for anyone's permission to turn the tables. Quite frankly, he sounds like an angry waste of skin.

He's a racialist. I think that's the term.

So long as it's basically his personal preference, and he understands that, and he's not invading other countries and slaughtering "inferiors," that's a relatively mild nationalism.

Of course, I'm a creole, colonist-descended mutt, and I reserve the right to mock racialist essentialism.

I just looked at the links and haven't read the text yet. But jeez, if you're not racist, you should take care to make your imagery look less like straight Nazism, because people are for sure going to get you mixed up with the racists. Maybe get a beta.

Okay yeah, he is super racist. This business about how people shouldn't ever travel to different places or date/marry/have kids outside their own ethnic group is a dead giveaway. He may see he doesn't see any one race as better or worse but that isn't true. You don't post that kind of picture from groups with those kind of names unless you're racist.
