Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?
(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)I have someone who I'm friends with on Facebook, and lately, he's started posting a lot of stuff about how "all groups are allowed to love their race/be proud of their race, except for white people!" Or sometimes, replace "white people" with "native [of European country]."
He also posted a rant about how people think it's okay for any other group of people to forbid marrying outside the race/group/tribe/etc. but people would call him racist if he said the same thing. Apparently marrying outside his ethnicity (so I guess not only do they have to be white, but a native of his country, whose ancestors were all from his country) would be against his religious beliefs.
And of course, immigration is wrong.
But he insists he doesn't see any race as better than the others. He just thinks they should all stick to their own countries and not marry outside their own ethnic groups.
So now I'm unsure if this type of opinion is racist. Usually the people who are against immigration and interracial marriage are, but is it still racist if you don't see one race as superior or inferior?
This is the type of memes that he keeps reposting:

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)Can he really not think of why people of color might not want to marry someone white. There's a fair bit of anxiety that goes with it -'do they like me for me or my skin color?'
Re: Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?
(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 02:04 am (UTC)(link)??? is this a common mentality? i've seen the opposite claimed - i.e., black guys date white girls stereotype - so i guess it surprises me that everybody thinks ppl are marrying them for skin color?

And yes, he is racist. The giveaway is the "but it's not okay for white people to do this thing that I think all other races/ethnicities are allowed to do."

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, that's racist and xenophobic. At first I was like "eh, not racist, just flawed logic", but when I got there...

Re: Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?
the third one is just straight up xenophobic though. And the pictures clinch it. No other way around it. And that pretty much damns the first two as well, cause if that's the way he feels, the context is pretty obvious.
Sorry dude. Your friend has some fucking issues.

Those facebook links scream straight to crazy racist town though.
Re: Is this attitude racist or xenophobic?
As George Carlin once put it, no one should be "proud" of their race/ethnicity, as it is nothing more than an accident of birth.
If immigration is wrong, then everyone in the world should simply move back to the heart of Africa. Then we could all stick to our own country.
It sounds like your "friend" is in love with being a supposed victim of reverse racism, and is looking for anyone's permission to turn the tables. Quite frankly, he sounds like an angry waste of skin.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 01:08 am (UTC)(link)So long as it's basically his personal preference, and he understands that, and he's not invading other countries and slaughtering "inferiors," that's a relatively mild nationalism.
Of course, I'm a creole, colonist-descended mutt, and I reserve the right to mock racialist essentialism.
