(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 12:49 am (UTC)(link)Coyotes in some areas are an invasive species wrecking the ecosystem; for bonus funsies, they can crossbreed with other canids (wolves, wild dogs), and become larger (wolf hybrids) or more aggressive (hybridized with wild dogs).
Think of it like this: coyotes are the equivalent of mammalian cockroaches in some environments; they spread disease and filth, and kill endangered species, since they are carnivorous predators.
TL;DR: some places pay for coyote pelts and they will not ever be over-hunted

This would not stop me from sobbing uncontrollably when I stumbled on a feral that had been shot. But it does mean that feral won't be producing anymore litters, thus leading to about five million MORE cats that have to be shot.
Or adopted out, too. ANd we all know just how empty pet shelters are because of how many people are just rushing to adopt all those animals! I mean, we've totally solved the problem of making sure all those stray cat's babies are adopted in pet friendly homes, right? Riiiiggght????
