I don't get why the last one is so hard to understand? I see it as an extension of roleplaying.

Wait. Wait. People do that? I mean, there are times when I go anon (it's usually when I'm feeling really socially anxious. I've been trying to post anon less and less, though, as a way of battling that), but I'd never go anon and pretend to be someone else in a thread that I've started while signed in. :-/

I don't have one. Yet. Too lazy to come up with a name.

This, basically.

Nah, at most I've got two tabs open. I don't really comment much so it isn't too hard to remember where I've posted. I just go back after a while and check to see if I got any responses. :)

I would be so frustrated if I didn't get all the notifications from my comments, I actually want to talk to people and reply, sometimes you learn something interesting!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how I do it even when I post logged in. Getting replies sent to my inbox is what drives me crazy.

But I can also track a particular thread if I want to.

Way back when I was on TV Tropes, I made a massive list of usernames I'd thought up that no one had taken yet. Any of these sound interesting?

Crystal Soul
He Who Waits
Fire Hydra
Dapper Chap
Schmidt The Twit
Returning Axe
Gray Braun
Blast Rifle
Luck Of The Irish
Knicknack
Paddy Black
Felinoid
One Hand Slapping
Honor Lost
Scholar Of Myth
Ancient Horror
Distressing Damsel
Bikini Inspector
Mercanary
Lost Little Boy

Tempted to become Schmidt the Twit just because it rhymes. Also Mercanary is adorable. Totally imaging a cute canary cosplaying as a mercenary. D'aaaaaw.

I like Felinoid. It jumped out to me right away. It's like a product of Feelings. Android colloid.

Um, oops

I don't know. I post anon sometimes even though I have an account, and I do it for a lot of reasons, but I do think most of them boil down to me being a fucking weirdo.

1) if I'm logged in, I feel like I have to own what I'm saying more, especially on controversial topics. I feel more pressure, and I feel like I'm only willing to talk if it's something that I'm fairly certain that I have the knowledge and experience to talk about. I spend a lot more time thinking about it and making sure that I can stand by my statements and making sure that everything sounds right. I don't think this is fundamentally justifiable, because either I should be willing to say something or I shouldn't. Like, if I can't stand by it, I shouldn't say it. but you know how it is.

2) Revealing things about myself. It's just something that I have problems with. Talking about my emotions and anything personal is something I worry about, and being anon often feels more comfortable as a way to do that. I just worry about how things are going to be perceived. The old social anxiety and all that thing. It's a problem that I have in general, not just on here, but it still plays into it, even though it's low stakes and basically irrational.

3) There was a third reason but I forgot it. Oh yeah! I go anon in Doctor Who discussions because I'm still trying to pretend to myself that I'm not a Doctor Who fan but I should really just cut that out and accept that I'm one of them. Gabba gabba hey.

Anyway yeah I think all of those things basically have to do with my own anxieties, more than anything else, but those are essentially the reasons I sometimes don't want to say what I'm thinking when I'm logged in.

Okay, that made me laugh.

I get the anxiety thing, though. I have it too and sometimes I worry way too much about my comments, even when I'm not saying anything of note. I don't often comment on controversial topics, not because my opinions are polarizing ones, but because I don't feel like I'm eloquent enough to express myself in the way I want. (Or, same as you, I'm not sure I'm educated enough on the topic.) For that same reason I very rarely post anon.

If you duck up in an anon post...you just ignore it. You know what you meant and that all the criticism is based on something you didn't mean and is thus irrelevant.

I don't know, I think your posts are a good thing insofar as they do encourage people to post more logged in. I don't think they're a problem, unless it's particularly frustrating for you personally or something. I wouldn't worry about it.

WRT revealing personal stuff, I think for me, it almost feels like if you're anonymous, it's not you. It's just another anonymous person on the Internet revealing this stuff. It's easier to keep it in stride. I don't think that's a rational point of view but for whatever reason, that seems to be how it is. Just different methods of weirdness I guess.
