Whatever.
(The reason I stopped playing the game, though, is because the fucking overworld map was so impossible to navigate.)
Re: 44
Agreed. I almost couldn't finish the game for that very reason. I started hating all the characters for what they did to him and it really tainted the whole thing for me.
Re: 44
As much as I disliked the brat, I wished I had the ability to jump into the game and make everyone die a painful death (with the exception of Guy, Natalia, Mieu and maybe Ion. I'm convinced they are really the only ones who gave a damn about Luke regardless of what anyone else said).
Sorry for launching into a rant there. This game stirs up a whole lot of passions in me. XD
Re: 44
(Natalia's also one of the good ones.)

(Anonymous) 2007-12-15 05:36 am (UTC)(link)Re: 44
When he destroyed Akzeriuth, yes, he needed people to make sure he took responsibility for what he'd done, but after that they acted like he was a terrible human who didn't deserve a second chance, even when he was desperately trying to change. Tear told him that she didn't buy his routine for a moment and she would judge him every damn step of the way. He didn't need to be told he was a terrible human being -- he already believed that! He wasn't "learning the hard way", he was being kicked when he was down and told that they'd kick him some more every time he tried to get back up.
Luke's friends are dicks to him. The end.
Re: 44
(Anonymous) 2007-12-15 06:01 am (UTC)(link)Everyone else in the group was on a mission to SAVE the people of Akzeriuth. For them the only people that mattered were the citizens who were dying rather horrible deaths. Why would they want to deal with a brat who snapped at every piece of advice given to them? People needing saving > brat anyday, in my books. No one tried to help him that ENTIRE time BEFORE Akzeriuth, REALLY? I think you've got a screw loose. They all mentioned Luke's attitude to him several times and warned him that he better shape up. It was his decision to ignore their warning.
He DIDN'T deserve another chance. He kept whining that it wasn't his fault. Why should anyone console a person claiming it wasn't their fault when he had to share at least partial blame? Anyone else would've been beside themselves with grief over this crime but all Luke could say was "It's not my fault, Van was...not my fault...Master Van, Master Van, Master Van". They would've been by his side the entire time if he just admitted that he was in the wrong. But NOPE. Luke hadn't learned his lesson yet. Tear didn't say she didn't buy his routine for a minute. She said she would watch over him to make sure his words would finally be put into action.
Why don't you play the game and actually pay attention to what the OTHER characters are doing for a change? Luke is a good character who goes from one extreme to the other before finally finding a balance but you wouldn't know that would you?
Re: 44
No one should hug Luke instead of making him take responsibility for the lives lost.
No one should have told him Akzeriuth is not his fault.
There are about five minutes during which Luke convinces himself that it isn't his fault. During this time, his friends abandoned him. Good. They should have, if he was that deluded.
I am not talking about this time. Okay? Can you grasp that? Is that okay?
I am talking about a period shortly after this time.
In this period, Luke knew that it was his fault, that he had failed utterly, that he was responsible.
He swore to try and become a better person.
Tear told him she didn't think he could ever be a better person and that she would judge him every step of the way. Many of his "friends" sneered at him and reminded him of his failures every time he might have felt better about himself. He was trying to grow as a character and they are trying to put him in a box.
This is why they are dicks.
This doesn't mean that they are evil or that *LAWL* I am ignoring them. Frankly, if I joined the fandom, I'd probably ignore Luke entirely. I'm way more interested in Anise, Peony, Guy, Natalia, Asch, etc. But that doesn't mean they don't treat Luke like crap.
Intelligent and rational people are capable of making the distinction that sometimes awesome characters act like dicks.
Maybe that will keep you from constructing straw men for twelve seconds? Too much to hope for?
Re: 44
After Akzeriuth he didn't just learn his lesson, he was absolutely flattened. I mean, first he's riding in the head of Asch, who totally hates his guts (which is another plate of tomatoes) and treats him like trash. He goes through massive amounts of denial when it comes to Van. He goes on a massive, extended guilt trip and puts himself down at every opportunity. It takes him quite a while to get back to a semblance of the old energy he had had before. I'd call it inevitable for the sake of the storyline, not a healthy thing for his character.
It pissed me off that Luke got so much more shit for Akzeriuth than Ion did - when it comes right down to it, they both had an equal share of the blame for what happened.
Re: 44
(Anonymous) 2007-12-15 06:12 am (UTC)(link)Luke's decline in attitude really upset me. I do agree that his attitude was changing and that was from one thing: experience. He learned the hard way that he had to pay for food (I found the scene hilarious). He learned the hard way that fighting against a human being in battle is a fight to the death. This is why I believe he could only learn things when the going got tough - he never would've learned all this (and suffered the same heartache) if he had stayed within the mansion walls. Which is why Luke had to learn to grow up the hard way - nothing else was working and it must've been frustrating for all those people to see him change so quickly after he was making progress. I think everyone else keeps forgetting that the other characters were hurting on the inside as well - not just Luke. They also blamed themselves for the destruction and they really had no fault in it.
Re: 44
Yes it was very upsetting, but it was crucial to Luke's character development.
In fact his changes was one of the reasons why I love Tales of the Abyss.
The Overworld Map was a bitch to navigate, but it got a lot easier when you got the teleporting option.
