[Louisa May Alcott's Little Women]

What is it with the hard to read fonts today? :/

Marmee can be preachy, but novels for young girls were expected to be "instructional" in 1868. I guess we can be glad that she's not more so, considering LMA's parents were both ardent transcendentalists.

Mte. I could barely read it between the font and the neon coloring.

"I find Marmee to be irritatingly preachy.

I also think it was negligent of her to spend so much time teaching the girls moral lessons without also teaching them practical life skills like how to cook, budget and manage a household."

Marmee should have also taught her girls proper penmanship (or font use).

I figured it was just implied that she was teaching them those sort of things because LMA assumed mothers were already doing that and that it would be boring/not relevant to her plots. But the moral lessons can never be stressed too far.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's a good reason to not cover it extensively in the book, but there are several key plot points that revolve around the daughters failing at a mundane task, and Marmee doing very little to prevent or remedy it. Yet we're told Marmee is a devoted, caring mother with no explanation as to why she'd neglect to teach her daughters some really important skills they'd need, especially when it was likely they would never have much money. (Obviously no one predicted Amy would marry Laurie at that stage.)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
They failed at (some) mundane tasks because they get distracted (Meg and Jo with the bread) or don't think their grandiose plans through (Jo's dinner party), and Marmee deliberately let them fail to show them that even "mundane" tasks require time and care, and for everybody to contribute. And (IIRC) it only happens in the one chapter.

And it turns out that they were mostly naked the whole time, because Marmie never taught them to dress themselves.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! That book just got a whole lot more interesting!

Honestly, the whole book was irritatingly preachy. God, did I hate Jo. Jo sucked. And when Beth kicked the can I shed no tears.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Jo, but everyone else bugged me. Especially Margaret, who took forever to grow out of that silly, vain teenage girl phase.

If you think these are bad, stay faaaaar away from her other books then. Jack and Jill are pretty bad, and the Rose series (Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom) are laughable. Even Old-Fashioned Girl, which is pretty bad, is good compared to those.

I agree so much! I hated Little Women when I read it as a kid.

To be fair, she did a lot better than Louisa M Alcott's actual parents did...

...but just remembered the first English fanfic I ever wrote, where all the sisters were transported into the future...somehow (it's been a decade and a half) and had to fight a robot uprising against mankind. Amy kicked the bucket because I hated her, and the remaining three were crowned queen, but Jo and Meg were afraid they would abuse their power so they relinquished their power to Beth.

Wow, that takes me back. I can almost smell New York.

The only thing I remember of the book was reading it and being convinced right up until the end that Laurie was a girl. Which made "her" romance with Jo amazingly progressive.

I literally put down a book last year because I thought at first that the protagonist was a boy because of the name and was in a homosexual relationship, and when I realized she was female with a boyish name I was so disappointed I set the book down with a snarl.
